And the League Two outfit made their feelings on the issue clear in a club statement.

They said: “Cove Rangers FC is aware of an image which is circulating relating to one of our players at the recent Celtic v Rangers match.

“As a club we do not condone such behaviour and expect all of our players to represent our club in the correct manner at all times.

“Fraser Aird’s contract with the club was due to expire at the start of January and as a result he will be leaving the club with immediate effect.”

Aird took to social media yesterday offering contrition, as he tweeted: “I apologise for my actions yesterday at the Old Firm.

“I got caught up in supporting my boyhood club and did something thoughtless.

“I know that as a professional footballer I have a certain responsibility to carry myself in an appropriate manner.

“Yesterday I didn’t do that. I hope everyone will forgive me for it. Happy New Years everybody.”

The 24-year-old joined Paul Hartley’s Cove Rangers in September having been without a club since leaving Dundee United in the summer.

He scored three goals in ten appearances for the Highland League champions.

The Canadian international came through the ranks at Ibrox and made his Rangers first-team debut in 2012 when the club were in Scottish football’s fourth tier.

He became a Gers regular before leaving for Vancouver Whitecaps on loan in January 2016.

Aird left Rangers for good a year later, signing a short-term deal with Falkirk before spells with Dunfermline, Queen of the South and United.

Cove Rangers – who appointed ex-Celtic star Hartley as boss in the summer – are top of League Two going into the New Year.

Meanwhile, Gers star Alfredo Morelos is set to miss the first THREE games of 2020 following his red card against Celtic.

The Colombian striker was sent off after picking up two bookings in Sunday’s 2-1 win at Parkhead.

The Ibrox club today released a statement calling for the introduction of VAR and defending Morelos’ throat-slitting gesture following his dismissal.
