He had found his range, marking out his territory when he had a dig from a similar position just four minutes into his first Champions League start.
Neuer saved that easily enough, but he was a bystander when Sessegnon had time on his side when Lo Celso’s pass deflected off Jerome Boateng.
It drew a little fist pump from his manager, a spontaneous gesture from the Special One after making the call to start him.
To plunge him into a Champions League away game against a club as decorated as Bayern Munich takes guts.
Sessegnon, like his manager, showed no fear.
They had come from behind, with their defence finally caving into some relentless early pressure.
Paulo Gazzaniga had already saved brilliantly from Benjamin Pavard’s volley before they scrambled away Thiago Alcantara’s follow-up.
A minute later they got their goal.
Serge Gnabry, the rascal who scored four in the 7-2 demolition at White Hart Lane, dinked a ball towards Kingsley Coman.
He had time and space because Kyle Walker-Peters had switched off, drifting into the centre of the Spurs defence instead of sticking to his man.
Coman, accepting the takedown after a deflection off Moussa Sissoko, placed it comfortably beyond Gazzaniga.
It had been coming.
He was a menace down the left, but his night was cut short when he hobbled off with an injury after 27 minutes.
His replacement – Thomas Muller – isn’t a bad swap.
With Gnabry swapping wings, poor old Walker-Peters was trying to stop the man who was looking to give fans of former club Arsenal a reason to keep watching.
It was his effort after 35 minutes that led to Thiago Alcantara’s baffling miss from a few yards out.
All he had to do was poke in the rebound from Gnabry’s effort, but for some inexplicable reason he steered it wide.

Muller spared his blushes on the stroke of half-time.
Tottenham’s defence played like they were on roller-skates, haring around like first-timers in that opening 45.
Mourinho will not like that.
Gazzaniga did well to save from Alphonso Davies, but the wily old fox Muller scored from close range.
They nearly had another before the break when Philippe Coutinho tried his luck from a good 25 yards.
Gazzaniga got a glove to it, tipping it on to the underside of the bar before Spurs wriggled clear of danger again.
There was a bit of the 7-2 swagger about them, with Bayern shrugging off their domestic issues to show what they really are about.
They targeted Walker-Peters, building sustained attacks on Tottenham’s vulnerable right-back.
He needs a reset, some face-to-face time with Mourinho so that he can really learn the art of defending.
That, or he will be plying his trade for Barnet or someone before he knows it.
There is no hiding place on the big stage and a night chasing these famous red jerseys was no fun for a few others.
It got Mourinho’s competitive juices flowing, sending for Heung-Min Son with just under half an hour left on the clock.
With Harry Kane and Dele Alli at home, Son was the go-to guy for a coach who cannot stomach defeat.
Oliver Skipp joined him, switching it up with Lucas Moura and Giovani Lo Celso in the moments after Coutinho scorched earth with a belting third.

Spurs went to sleep, giving the little Brazilian time on the edge of the area to weigh up his effort.
In it went, whistling beyond Gazzaniga after Dier and Sissoko failed to get anywhere near the Bayern No10.
There was a response from Spurs, with Neuer getting a touch on Eriksen’s free-kick 10 minutes from time.
Bayern had put the game to bed by then, finishing off this group with a decent win against Mourinho’s Plan B.
After this, it is back to Plan A.
