BARNSLEY have confirmed the appointment of Gerhard Struber as their new manager.
The Austrian, 42, replaces Daniel Stendel after he was sacked in October despite promotion from League One last season.
Under-18s boss Adam Murray had been interim gaffer since then.
But Struber will now be in the dug-out for Saturday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers.
Barnsley have struggled this season and find themselves bottom of the Championship table with just nine points from 16 games.
They’ve won only once this term and have the worst goal difference in the competition while sitting two points behind Stoke and five off safety.
However, Struber could be the man to turn things around after managing Austrian bigwigs Wolfsberger in this season’s Europa League.
He spent 13 years as a player before turning his hand to coaching in 2007.
After going through the Red Bull coaching system at RB Salzburg, he developed an intense brand of football known for its pressing and attacking qualities.
Struber has signed a deal at Oakwell until 2022, with the option to extend for a further year.
And Barnsley’s new Head Coach admits he can’t wait to get started.
Struber told the club’s official website: “I am extremely happy and proud that everything has worked out and I would like to thank the board for giving me this opportunity.
“The last couple of days have been extremely exciting and I am ready for the challenge to do everything we can, to keep this club in the Championship.
“Now is a time for everyone to pull together, the board, the management team, the squad, the wider club staff and of course our passionate supporters.
“If we can do this together, we can keep this club in this league.
“I can’t wait to start working for this club and town, and especially to meet you all at the game this weekend.”
Barnsley CEO Dane Murphy added: “Gerhard is a young coaching talent that any side would be pleased to have.
“The club had pursued him in the past as his tactical approach and track record of developing burgeoning talent appeals to the core philosophies at Barnsley.
“Gerhard made it quite clear that he believes in our project and has confidence that the club can remain in the Championship under his stewardship, which is the club’s main objective for this season.
“This was a long, arduous process that tested the patience of many working to better the club.
“In the end the labour has bore fruit and we are anticipating an enticing brand of football with Gerhard at the helm.”
