Arsenal transfer blow as Man City enter race for RB Leipzig’s £40m rated defender Dayot Upamecano

ARSENAL could rue their decision not to land long-term target Dayot Upamecano in the summer as Man City join the race for his signature, according to reports.

The Gunners were in the market to land the RB Leipzig defender before the start of the season but refused to raise their final £55million offer.

SunSport exclusively revealed how the France centre-back has remained at the very top of their transfer shortlist.

With his contract expiring at the end of next season, Upamecano’s value continues to plummet and the Gunners believe they could now land him for £40m.

Under pressure Spanish boss Unai Emery is desperate for the 21-year-old to join the club to help their defensive woes.

But that’s also the case for Pep Guardiola who has seen his City side fall nine points behind Liverpool in the title race.

His side’s defence have been rocked by the long-term injury to Aymeric Laporte and they have now conceded 13 goals this season – four more than Sheffield United.

The current champions also failed to replace former captain Vincent Kompany who departed for Anderlecht in the summer.

Guardiola knows that he has to make a move in the market for a centre-back and 90min write how Upamecano is firmly in their sights.

He has lost faith in Nicolas Otamendi and has instead preferred to play Fernandinho in a makeshift defensive role.

RB Leipzig will make a hefty profit on Upamecano after signing him for just £9m from sister club RB Salzburg in 2017.
