ALEX MARQUEZ defied gravity to avoid crashing out of free practice at the Japanese Moto2 Grand Prix on Saturday.
A huge crash seemed inevitable as the Spaniard began to somersault off his bike but he managed to cling onto his handlebars.
The back wheel on Marquez’s Kalex bike lost control on the slippery Twin Ring Motegi surface as he took a corner.
It forced his legs up into the air at high speed – and his helmet almost onto the front wheel.
But he somehow kept his balance and held onto the side of the bike as it continued on in the rain.
His feet skirting along the tarmac, the 23-year-old expertly guided his bike to the side of the track and slowed it gently to a halt before stopping and climbing aboard.
Championship leader Marquez quickly put the scare behind him to qualify fourth for Sunday’s race.
After finishing fourth overall in both the past two years, he currently holds a 40-point lead atop the standings of the MotoGP reserve series with four races left.
Marquez’s awesome save was reminiscent of Nicky Ajo almost going over his handlebars but holding on in Moto3 four years ago.
Although the Finn missed out on a points finish as a result.
