Draped in a Union Jack flag, Hamilton was quizzed just how many more titles he could go on a win.

He said: “I am as fresh as I can be right now. We will not let up and keep pushing.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who will start contract negotiations with Hamilton in the winter, said the Brit can go on to win many more titles.

He added: “Lewis is still very motivated, he wants to win every race. As long as that is there he can go for more. we need to give him a good car and then there is no limit.”

Hamilton battled back from fifth on the grid to finish second behind his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, to end this season’s title race with two races to go.

He added: “My dad told me when I was six or seven never to give up and that became the family motto.

“I pushed as hard as I could and I was hoping to win today but didn’t have it in the tyres.

“It’s overwhelming if I am honest. I wanted to recover today and deliver the one-two for the team.

“I feel so much emotion. It goes out to the whole team here, the factory, mum and dad, my step-mum and step-dad, my uncle George and my aunt from Trinidad and all my family back home.

Hamilton’s dad, Anthony said: “An unbelievable win, six world championships, who would ever have dreamed it.

“We didn’t really talk much about the championship. It’s always about doing well at the next race.

“Six means the world to him. This feels like 2007, the first opportunity we had to win the world championship.”

Wolff said his team, who have already won the Constructors’ Championship, would continue to party on the plane home.

He said: “We will all be on the same flight to London so hopefully there is a minibar and I hope it is well stocked and then we can enjoy tomorrow.”

Race winner Bottas added: “Big congrats to Lewis. I personally failed on my target this year but there is always next year, but he deserves it. He had a strong season.”
