But what will he have to do to win the title?
How can Hamilton win the drivers’ title in the United States?
A sixth straight title for Mercedes has been guaranteed since the Japanese Grand Prix three weeks ago.
Hamilton wasn’t quite able to secure the result he needed to win the Drivers’ Championship in Mexico for a third year running.
But he did give himself a relatively straightforward task to secure the title in the United States.
Hamilton leads team-mate Valtteri Bottas by 74 points, with only 78 up for grabs.
That means only ONE of the following needs to happen for the Brit to lift the trophy tonight:
- Bottas fails to win the US Grand Prix
- Bottas wins the US Grand Prix with a fastest lap and Hamilton finishes in the top eight.
- Bottas wins the US Grand Prix without setting the fastest lap and Hamilton finishes in the top nine with a fastest lap.
How many world titles does Hamilton have?
Lewis Hamilton has amassed quite a career in Formula One, notching up his first title all the way back in 2008 while still at McLaren.
Yet, since joining Mercedes, it has been raining success for the Brit – winning the World Championship in four of the last five seasons.
Victory this year would earn him a sixth title, putting him just one behind record holder Michael Schumacher.
