BRIT Alex Sims recorded back-to-back pole positions in Saudi Arabia ahead of round two in Riyadh.
The BMW driver becomes the first driver in FE to secure three consecutive poles after also starting P1 in the final race of last season in New York.
Sims pushed his car to the limit and managed to avoid the barriers after a dramatic slide during his hot lap.
Afterwards, the Brit racer said: “It seems slightly bizarre, it’s fantastic.
“It was a very good lap, other than my power slide – but seemingly didn’t lose too much time because of it, thankfully. Despite it leading onto the longest straight.
“I am really happy, third in a row that’s really cool.”
Former F1 ace Sebastian Buemi starts second for Nissan ahead of Audi’s Lucas Di Grassi in third.
Techeetah’s Antonio Felix Da costa was on course to snatch pole from Sims at the end of qualifying, but pushed to hard and his mistake sees him start sixth.
He will be behind Jaguar’s Mitch Evans and Mahindra’s Jerome D’Ambrosio who start fourth and fifth respectively.
Frustrations continue for defending champions Jean-Eric Vergne as he starts 11th after retiring yesterday in the opening race of the season.
