Tyson Fury is the new people’s champion and will topple Anthony Joshua in ring too, claims Frank Warren

FRANK WARREN says Tyson Fury has already beaten Anthony Joshua in the popularity stakes and thinks he will do the same in the ring.

The Gypsy King, 31, became the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion when he dethroned Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.

But his mental health spiralled out of control and he became public enemy No 1 when vile YouTube interviews were released.

During his two years in the wilderness, blowing up to 28st, 2012 Olympic winner AJ snatched up his three old belts and millions of fans.

Fury’s sensational turnaround began at the start of 2018 and was completed on December 1 when he twice climbed off the canvas to earn a harsh draw with WBC champ Deontay Wilder that will be rerun on February 22.

In that time, Fury has run a one-man shows nationwide, been all over social and mainstream media, wrestled in the WWE and released a Christmas song with Robbie Williams.

Promoter Warren feels his man is the people’s champion and will become the official one if the two Brits clash.

He said: “I said, as soon as Joshua got beat, that he would start doing all these media things but Tyson is a man of the people and you have to be with the public.

“Years ago a reporter would pick the phone up to a footballer and they would speak, now it all goes via an agent and you get a statement and that is happening with AJ.

“Tyson has not been like that, he mixes with people and is accessible.

“He was not loved at one point but he was up front with the mistakes that he made and the mental problems he had.

“He expressed that he was in a bad place and should never have been saying those things. He has since made GMTV his second home and he has been very conscious of remaining open to the fans.

“The British public love a comeback story, providing they come back more humble.

“Tyson was never big-headed, he was suffering from serious paranoia, because he was a Traveller and felt like an outsider.”

Warren believes, in Fury and sensation Daniel Dubois, he now has two heavyweights in his stable that beat AJ.

Dubois, 22, will not be on Joshua’s agenda until he whacks his way into a mandatory spot in 2020.

Warren claims nothing will stop Fury vs AJ.

This despite Fury being broadcast by BT Sport and ESPN and Joshua backed by Sky Sports and DAZN — and his promotional rivalry with Eddie Hearn.

He said: “Fury vs Joshua would be the biggest fight in my time in boxing, bar none.

“It would be one of the biggest moments in British sport since England won the home World Cup in 1966. It would transcend boxing.

“Me and Eddie have never spoken, we don’t have to get on, we just have to sign the same piece of paper. We can even put them on both of our channels, there is no stumbling block.”
