Canelo Alvarez vacates WBO light-heavyweight title in hint he will return to super-middleweight for next fight

CANELO ALVAREZ has vacated his WBO light-heavyweight title – just six weeks after he beat Sergey Kovalev to win it.

The Mexican superstar, 29, has fuelled speculation that he will return to super-middleweight for his next fight.

The four-weight world title holder jumped up two divisions for his win over Kovalev in Las Vegas.

But he is expected to drop back down to middleweight or super-middleweight after vacating his belt.

Speaking about his decision, Canelo said: “I know that my accomplishments in the ring have brought pride to my fans and my country.

“I have longed enjoyed my relationship with the WBO and appreciate all they do to preserve and enhance the sport of boxing.

“This agreement allows the WBO to have its light heavyweight title contested regularly and allows me to pursue bouts against the best opponents, regardless of weight class.”

WBO President Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel added: “When his career is done, he will be regarded as one of the greatest boxers to ever stop into the ring, and one of Mexico’s best fighters ever.

“We look forward to his future fights against rivals at the top of the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and other divisions.”

Canelo’s decision has fuelled speculation that his next opponent could be Billy Joe Saunders.

Callum Smith is also in contention to take on the Mexican after his controversial points win over John Ryder last month.
