Dina Asher-Smith worries she might turn into a nervous wreck if she bags SPOTY 2019

SPRINT queen Dina Asher-Smith worries she might turn into a nervous wreck if she is honoured tonight in Aberdeen.

Britain’s fastest ever woman seems likely to finish in the top three of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

This is in recognition of her 200m world title triumph in Doha and the two silvers in the 100m and 4x100m relay.

But Asher-Smith said: “I get nervous speaking in front of lots of people.

“I can do the running and, if I need to speak after a race, that is fine. But if I am in a dress, I will get really nervous.

“It feels different because I’m not on home territory.

“If I have planned something to say, it will make me more nervous.”

Asher-Smith, 24, is second in the betting behind England’s World Cup-winning cricketer Ben Stokes.

That means she could finish above Formula One’s Lewis Hamilton as well as Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling.

Hamilton won an astonishing sixth Formula One Driver’s Championship.

While Sterling played an integral role in Manchester City winning another Premier League title.

Wales Rugby Union captain Alun Wyn Jones is also nominated, having skippered his team to Grand Slam Six Nations glory, as well as the World Cup final.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson is the final contender, having set four personal bests on the way to glory at the World Athletics Championships.
