Britain’s sprint queen Asher-Smith suffers ‘frustrating’ second-place at Anniversary Games in London

SPRINT queen Dina Asher-Smith was given a reality check ahead of autumn’s World Championships after being blown away by Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Britain’s fastest woman, a double gold winner at last year’s European Championships, finished second in the 100 metre final at London’s Anniversary Games on Sunday.

Despite equalling her season best of 10.91s in the heat, Asher-Smith was 0.01s slower in the main event and 0.12s off world and double Olympic champ Fraser-Pryce.

She said: “I wanted to go 10.8s today, so seeing that time in the final was a bit frustrating.

“I came here wanting to win my home Diamond League, wanting to run a 10.8s.

“But to run two low sub-10s, to have placed really high in that kind of field – which could have been a World or Olympic final – I’m really proud.”

The London Stadium event acted as a staging post for the Worlds which begin in Doha at the end of September.

And despite the 23-year-old not dipping below 11s this season, she remains behind Fraser-Pryce who is nine years her senior.

Asher-Smith added: “Obviously it bodes well for them, but in terms of what it dictates for the World Championships we never know.

“I haven’t peaked yet. We’re still in heavy training so to consistently run 10.9s I’m very happy.

“I think there’s a few things I need to work on ahead of Doha but really it’s just about peaking.

“We have trials in August, so I’m looking forward to getting out of hard training and reaching my peak for then.”
