Ex-Man City star Wayne Bridge ‘HATES’ Roberto Mancini, and blasts Italy manager for tactics saying players won the title

FORMER England and Manchester City star Wayne Bridge says the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 defeat to Italy hurt him more than most – because he HATES Roberto Mancini. The 42-year-old moved to the Etihad in 2009 at the same time as the now Azzurri boss took charge of the Cityzens.

After initially featuring regularly at left-back, he was soon out-of-favour and was shipped out to West Ham, Sunderland and then Brighton before he eventually left City permanently for Reading in 2013.
Bridge, who won 36 caps for England, watched on with the rest of the nation as Mancini’s Italy were crowned European Championship winners after beating Gareth Southgate’s men in a penalty shootout.
And he has admitted to bettingexpert’s The Big Stage that seeing his former manager lift the trophy left a bitter taste.
Bridge said: “It really hurt me because I hate Mancini, everyone knows I have no love for him.

“I wouldn’t say he’s the worst I’ve had, but tactically he isn’t that great. What he did was good, which hurts to stay.
“Not only was my family cheering for England, they were cheering that Mancini was losing, so it hurt us even more. I never really got him as a manager.
“All credit to what he did at Manchester City when winning the league, so City fans will love him, but if you look at the players and the squad that he had, that’s what won it, not him as a manager.”
Bridge added: “I fell out with him. I was there for a few months and we got on well but I didn’t enjoy training at all.

“We did team shape against mannequins and as a full-back we’re told ‘you’re going to pass it to him or to him, if you pass it there then run that way, if you pass it to him go that way,’ you’d have two options and that was it and playing against mannequins isn’t football.
“[Craig] Bellamy was trying to ask a question ‘what happens if this happens in a game’, and Mancini would say ‘shut up, be quiet’ and in the end he sent him home and he wouldn’t have him back at training.

He became a central figure in the coverage of the sport, often reminiscing about his own time in Formula One with teams like Jaguar and Sauber.
However, Sky Sports decided to axe him from the commentary team two months before this year’s coverage started, along with fellow pundit and former driver Paul di Resta.
Both were at the end of their respective contracts but were not offered extensions.
It was speculated that cost-cutting was behind Sky Sports’ decision not to have the two back.

Herbert posted a photo of the Sky Sports F1 team to Instagram to confirm his departure from the broadcaster.

“And then I got a call in December, I think it was, when I was told things were changing.
“It wasn’t really explained why or what was changing. There was a mention of social media stuff and that was about it, really. I really don’t know.
“I was always aware – at Sky they do these subscriber checks where you’re given points out of 10 – and I’ve always known I was always quite popular on that side.
“It’s a shame, but I’m over it. Moving on.”
Herbert is now presenting his own podcast called Lift the Lid, which he co-hosts with fellow racer Billy Monger.

Herbert said about the podcast “This is great to do with Billy, for example.
“There are other opportunities out there, once again just proving that if you work hard you can find different avenues to carry on being involved in the sport we love.
“So there’s other things going on, which is fine.
“Yes, it’s disappointing, but I’ve moved on.”
The 59-year old added that he didn’t think he would be returning to TV screens this season.
He added: “I did my 11 years at Sky and it was good. Now there are other things I am doing.

DIEGO COSTA incredibly moved his entire life out of England with him after quitting Chelsea – including the nightclub he had installed in his Surrey mansion. The controversial striker returned to Atletico Madrid in September 2017 for £67million after being told he wasn’t in Antonio Conte’s plans anymore.

He had moved his family out to the Spanish capital prior to sealing his switch back to Diego Simeone’s side.
The 34-year-old, who most recently played for Wolves, even put his fleet of British cars up for sale in anticipation of his exit as he cleared up his belongings in the UK.
But one essential thing he didn’t want to miss out on was the full-blown club he had installed in the conservatory of his home near the Blues’ Cobham training ground.
The Brazilian-born Spain international is known to enjoy the good life away from football and was one of the characters in the Chelsea squad.
So he splashed out to get his conservatory converted into a nightclub.
And it was completed with top of the range lighting and sound system.
And he enjoyed that aspect of London life so much he was desperate to take it with him back to Madrid.
So he ordered a team to rip out the club piece by piece and transport it out to his home in Spain.

Rio Ferdinand admits he binged on ten pints of Guinness and vodka regularly during his career with parts a ‘blur’

RIO FERDINAND enjoyed boozing so much as a youngster he would go on benders and drink ten pints of Guinness before hitting the shots. The Manchester United legend, now 44, has revealed he was part of a major drinking culture early in his career which saw him juggle football with nights out partying.

Former Red Devils and England captain Ferdinand played 81 times for his country and was regarded as one of the best defenders in world football.
But he confesses there was a time he behaved “like a lunatic” as he downed pints and vodka for fun.
In an interview with the Guardian in 2019, Ferdinand – who came through the ranks at West Ham – said: “I used to go through a load when I was younger.
“I could probably do eight, nine, ten [pints]. Then I’d move on to the vodkas.
“I could go through loads. I could go all day drinking, then wake up and go again when I was younger.
“I always say to people who ask if I have any regrets about playing, I wouldn’t have drunk alcohol.
“When I was younger I did. I was a lunatic. When I was at West Ham, elements of my career are a blur.
“People talk about performances and results at certain times in them games and I just sit and nod my head.

By the time Ferdinand made his record-breaking move from Leeds to Man Utd in 2002 for £30million, he had started to pull back from the abyss and largely cut out alcohol during the season.
But he would still cut loose in the off-season with lengthy benders.
Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles with United, added: “In the summers I’d drink for two weeks. Bang. Just keep drinking.
“Yes. I was lucky. I had a natural ability that could get me through that period of my life.
“But I got to a point where I had to make a decision to be more professional.”

The worst bust-ups between players and managers, including Fergie and Beckham, Keane and Mourinho and more

NOBODY is bigger than the club.Romelu Lukaku’s fate at Manchester United was reportedly sealed when he fell out with assistant manager Mike Phelan in 2019, and was immediately shipped off to Inter Milan on transfer window day.

David Luiz was accused of thinking he was bigger than Chelsea by Andreas Christensen after sealing his move to Arsenal in a sensational £8m deal in the same year, which the Blues later denied.
And in recent times, we’ve seen Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang escorted out of the Emirates after falling out of favour with Mikel Arteta. Mesut Ozil’s fate also went the same way.
It shows that often players often fall out with their clubs, managers and team-mates in the high-pressure of professional football.
SunSport presents seven of the best bust-ups involving the stars… kicking off with a Man Utd legend:
    FERGIE/BECKHAM
Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t one to suffer fools gladly.
Paul Ince, Roy Keane, and Jaap Stam were all first teamers who upset the hard-nosed Scot and found themselves heading for the exit door.
However, Fergie’s most high-profile bust-up with one his stars came in the shape of poster-boy David Beckham.
As he revealed in his autobiography, the Red Devils legend was furious at his side’s FA Cup exit to Arsenal in 2003 and singled Becks out for his poor performance in the dressing room.
He claimed he had noticed the England legend’s energy levels weren’t what they were and told him in no uncertain terms his mind wasn’t on the game.
The pair had a row and Fergie kicked a boot that slapped Becks in the face and cut his eye.
Less than half a year later, Beckham was headed to Real Madrid after Fergie washed his hands with him.

    KEANE/MCCARTHY
In truth, Keane could have an argument with his kitchen sink, as he has proven in more recent years while working as a Sky Sports pundit.
But in the build-up to the 2002 World Cup, Keane voiced his issues with Republic of Ireland being based in Saipan, including the training pitch and travel arrangements in an explosive interview with the Irish Times.
Mick McCarthy blasted Keane for his behaviour, so the fiery midfielder unleashed his own form of hell.
    “Mick, you’re a liar… you’re a f****** w*****. I didn’t rate you as a player, I don’t rate you as a manager, and I don’t rate you as a person. You can stick your World Cup up your a***,” he said.
“The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country. You can stick it up your b*******.”
Keane was sent home from the World Cup in disgrace, chased by reporters who wanted quotes as he walked his dogs.

    SOUNESS/BELLAMY
When the fiery pair were at Newcastle, they didn’t always see eye-to-eye.
And after Bellamy was substituted in a game against Charlton, he swore at his boss before leaving the pitch.
Souness revealed in his autobiography: “At our next team meeting, he was sitting in the front row and, as I was talking, he kept shaking his head. ‘What is it that you are not agreeing with?’ I said.
“Before he could answer me, I added: ‘Can we just go back over the past seven days of your life? You have told John Toshack he’s not getting the best from you with Wales, because he’s not using you in the correct position.
‘You have told our chairman that St James’ Park doesn’t suit Craig Bellamy and then, on Saturday, you called me a f***ing p**ck.’
“That’s when I physically got hold of him and asked him to come into the gym with me. I walked out of that meeting and thought: ‘What am I doing? Is this the job for me?’”
Just a few months later, following an incident where Bellamy feigned injury not to play a game on the wing, the Welshman was sold.

    SHEARER/BARTON
When Alan Shearer was tasked with trying to keep Newcastle United up with eight games to go in 2009, he had to manage the unmanageable Joey Barton.
Shearer recalled a conversation he had with Barton prior to a trip to Anfield, where the hot-headed midfielder would get stick.
His player assured him he’d be able to handle it.
But… “We were getting beat 3-0 and we were just about to take him off and he scythes Xabi Alonso down just in front of the Kop. Straight red card, suspended for the rest of the season,” Shearer recalled.
“He let me down, he let the club down, and then I just thought it was my time to say a few home truths in the dressing room.”
Barton was duly suspended for the last three matches, the Geordies were relegated and it was Shearer who lost his job.
Remarkably, Barton stayed to play in the Championship.

    LAWS/BONETTI
Ivano Bonetti won Serie A with both Juventus and Sampdoria before he took his silky skills to Grimsby Town in his twilight years.
It’s fair to say, The Mariners had never witnessed such a footballing talent at their club.
And it was the fans who brought him to the club, raising half the transfer fee with Bonetti paying the rest.
However, manager Brian Laws wasn’t impressed by his player in one game, laying down the law about his lack of effort in an epic post-match dust-up.
The argument culminated in Laws throwing a plateful of chicken legs (yes, you heard that right) and shattering Bonetti’s cheekbone.
The two kissed and made up in public, however Laws was soon forced out the club.

    POGBA/MOURINHO
In today’s game, player power has become paramount.
And French World Cup winner Paul Pogba and ‘The Special One’ Jose Mourinho were two egos ready to butt heads.
Their frosty relationship came to a head when Pogba questioned the Portuguese’s tactics and was stripped of United’s vice-captaincy in a draw against Wolves.
“We are at home and we should play much better against Wolves. When we are at home we should attack, attack, attack. That’s Old Trafford. We are here to attack,” Pogba said.
“I think teams are scared when they see Man United attacking and attacking. That was our mistake.
“Maybe the attitude should be better and we should play better because, again, we are at Old Trafford and we should just attack and press like we did against Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal last season.
“When we play like this it’s easier for us.”
Mourinho was the fall guy, and Pogba is still at Old Trafford – although their war of words was still continuing last month prior to Jose’s axing at Tottenham.

    DI CANIO/CLARKE
Not the most high-profile, but explosive all the same.
Di Canio was always going to struggle keeping his emotions in check as a football manager.
But just a month into his stint at Swindon Town an argument after a League Cup clash with Southampton with Leon Clarke was caught on camera.
The Italian grabbed at his striker’s shirt as he walked off the pitch, and as the two made their way down the tunnel they got into a tussle.
Clarke never played for Swindon after that and was sent on loan to Chesterfield just a week later.

Players who swapped football for fighting, including Rio Ferdinand, Marcin Wasilewski, Wayne Bridge and more

FOOTBALLERS are always encouraged to think about what career path they will take when they hang up their boots. Some choose to go into coaching, others invest in property… and some decide to knock lumps out of one another.

Former Leicester defender Marcin Wasilewski has become the latest ex-pro to swap shin pads for mouth guards.
The Pole, 43, retired from football in November 2020 and was tipped to enter the world of cage fighting.
A bout with ex-Bolton and Hearts defender Blazej Augustyn was even being lined up, however he is yet to fight.
Here, SunSport details the fighting careers of five other footballers who have turned to the ring.

    Rio Ferdinand
England legend Ferdinand’s football career brought several glittering moments but his boxing days were over before they really started.
Sponsored by a betting company to step into the ring in September 2017, the former defender was jarringly denied a licence.
The British Boxing Board of Control deemed it ‘not beneficial’ to allow Ferdinand his second career.

And the Manchester United hero quickly called time on his boxing comeback.
He said: “It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves.
“To not be given the chance to demonstrate my ability to the BBBofC through the standard assessment afforded to others is hard to take.”
Fast forward to October 2020 and Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn revealed his desire to stage an Old Trafford showdown between Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.

    Katie Taylor
Arguably the world’s top female boxer, Taylor is also a former Republic of Ireland international footballer.
The ex-winger starred for Peamount United in the late 2000s yet missed her side’s FAI Women’s Cup final in 2009 to be crowned Europe’s best amateur fighter.
Taylor won 11 caps for her country, scoring twice, before choosing to focus on boxing a decade ago.
Former team-mate Marie Curtin would later tell the Mirror that Taylor ‘would have excelled to the highest level’ had she stayed in football.
Curtin added: “There were no barriers. Her mindset is so strong and you need leaders like that on your team to win.”
And Taylor fondly remembers her playing days, even recalling a crunching tackle that was posted on Twitter a couple of years ago.

    Wayne Bridge
Hardly the most aggressive left-back of his day, ex-Chelsea man Bridge showed the fire in his belly with a stint in boxing two years ago.
A Sport Relief clash with Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews saw the defender take on a man nine years his junior.
The three-round affair started tightly before Bridge unleashed a barrage of blows.
Matthews hit the deck twice and yet made it to the final bell, at which Bridge won on points.
The former England international, who has also appeared on I’m A Celeb, retired from football aged 33 in 2014.
His boxing career ended with that one charity fight and he is now said to refer to himself as a ‘stay-at-home dad’ for the two kids he shares with wife Frankie.

    Leon McKenzie
A star forward for the likes of Norwich, Peterborough and Coventry on the pitch, McKenzie would later forge a decent super-middleweight career.
Having hung up his boots in January 2013, he pulled on the gloves just six months later.
A debut win over John Mason at Bethnal Green’s historic York Hall set him on a string of nine fights without defeat.
An English title fight with Jahmaine Smyle saw McKenzie suffer a first defeat before he rounded off an 11-fight career with a nine-round loss to Cello Renda.
The ex-striker also joined forces with former England cricketer Steve Harmison for a talkSPORT podcast on sports stars’ post-retirement plans.
He said: “For a while I was trying to hold on to ‘former professional boxer and footballer’. That was my identity. I’ve accepted my position now.”

    Curtis Woodhouse
Few footballers have made the switch to boxing as convincingly as Woodhouse.
Birmingham paid £1million to sign the midfielder from Sheffield United in 2001 before spells with Peterborough, Hull and more.
Disenchanted with the game, he quit aged 26 to spark a long career in the ring.
