Dillian Whyte STUNNED by Alexander Povetkin as Russian gets up from canvas to land huge KO

DILLIAN WHYTE blew 1000 days as No1 contender inside 15 minutes against Alexander Povetkin after a brutal KO.
The WBC interim and silver belt contest was billed as the ‘battle of the left hooks’ but it was a brilliant left uppercut that left the 32-year-old spark out on his back in the fifth.

    5

Alexander Povetkin stunned Dillian Whyte with a savage knockout

    5

Whyte was left out cold on the canvas
Whyte scored two knockdowns on the 40-year-old Russian in the fourth round and looked to be coasting toward a 12th consecutive win and his long overdue title fight against the winner of Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder’s trilogy.
But the referee did not even need to count when Povetkin detonated a sensational shot on the Body Snatcher and robbed him of all of his dreams.
Whyte made a slow but steady start with half a dozen crisp jabs ramming into his rival’s face.
Povetkin was not as patient, hurling two wild haymakers over the top that Whyte dodged, making the celebrated amateur look amateur.

The couple of punches Povetkin did land were hooks to the body but they did nothing to worry the 18st Jamaica-born powerhouse.
Both bangers went to the body in the second, Whyte aiming his trademark left hook lower than usual to look for the Soviet’s ribs.

    5

Whyte had Povetkin down twice in round four
Povetkin rammed a couple of right hands toward Whyte’s gut but he never looked and he blocked the first looping left hook Povetkin aimed at his chin.
The South Londoner started the third with a thudding left hook to Povetkin’s temple that should have put him in the driving seat for the rest of the session.

But the wiley old 2004 Olympic gold winner slugged his way back into the rounds and might have pulled it back on the scorecards.
Whyte almost had the fight won in the fourth when he dropped Povetkin twice in the fourth. A couple of right hands  and a left hook collapsed him early in the round.
The interim champ kept his cool, didn’t get greedy and waited until the end of the shift to again floor Povetkin with a left uppercut.
But Povetkin connected with a perfect peach of a shot and Whyte’s career was left in tatters.

    5

Povetkin won the WBC Diamond heavyweight belt
The Brixton ace – who was stabbed and shot during a brutal childhood spent raising hell on the South London streets – wore a costume stab vest for his ring walk but it could not protect him against the savage blow.
Whyte spent 22 weeks training at his new Portugal training camp, a move that cost him his partnership with trainer Mark Tibbs.
He dropped around 18lbs after ballooning up to 19st 5lbs for a sluggish win over Mariusz Wach in Saudi Arabia in December.
Once he landed back in the UK on Tuesday he checked into the Brentwood Holiday Inn but chose to shack up on a couple of Winnebagos to avoid the Russian veteran.
Whyte and promoter Eddie Hearn claimed the motorhome motel was a necessary move to prevent any pre-bout rumbles but their cordial media duties on Thursday and Friday made the caravans look little more than a clever PR stunt.

Povetkin scored a savage win over Liverpool’s David Price in 2018 and outpointed Hughie Fury a year later. An patriotic Brixton boy Whyte insisted he had been eyeing up a revenge mission on the Soviet for two long years.
But Whyte’s two-fight nemesis Joshua – who was on the site for commentary duty – was not as generous to his fellow Londoner and backed Povetkin to land a shock win over his old rival.
And AJ was proved right as the man he beat in 2018 utterly flattened by the man he beat in a 2015 barnstormer.

Anthony Joshua ready to take £5m hit by fighting behind closed doors as he looks to shake off ring rust

ANTHONY JOSHUA is ready to take a whack in the pocket by fighting behind closed doors.
Watford’s heavyweight king rakes in around £5million from ticket sales for his sold-out UK showdowns — so a fan-free 2020 bout was originally ruled out by promoter Eddie Hearn.

    3

Anthony Joshua is ready to take a £5m whack in the pocket by fighting behind closed doors

    3

Joshua, seen at the Whyte vs Povetkin fight, has not fought since December 2019
But with Covid-19 refusing to go away and the one-year anniversary of his last fight approaching, WBA, IBF and WBO champ AJ is eyeing up a very different return to the ring.
WBC holder Tyson Fury informed his matchmaker Frank Warren he wants a December fight, whatever the restrictions in place.
And Joshua has told Hearn a similar thing.
Hearn revealed to SunSport: “AJ wants to fight this year — and he will fight.

“Hopefully by December we will be in a situation where we can have a full, or close-to-full, O2.
“Because when you talk about no crowds causing a hole in budgets, his is around £5m.
“To counter that, we either have to find a site fee from someone or a way to bring crowds back.

“But he will fight, he has to, otherwise it will be a year out of the ring. We have to get him back in 2020.

“I would put him on behind closed doors now, yes. The numbers wouldn’t be as good — but he is prepared to do it.”
Joshua, 30, had booked a June 20 IBF mandatory defence against Kubrat Pulev at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, before the coronavirus struck.
And Hearn admits that the ongoing uncertainty the pandemic has caused means there are now more options on the table.

    3

AJ is eyeing up a very different return to the ring
He said: “Right now, the plan is still to fight Pulev, as he is the mandatory challenger.
“But this situation has put everything up in the air and there are a lot of moving parts.
“Anything can happen because people have to deliver more value.
“Joshua wants to fight Fury but he wants the WBC belt — the only one he is missing — more.
“He could fight Tyson Fury for it, he could fight Dillian Whyte for it. But that is now the belt he wants.”

I would put him on behind closed doors now, yes. The numbers wouldn’t be as good — but he is prepared to do it.
    Hearn on Joshua’s next fight

For a decade, Matchroom chief Hearn and Queensberry boss Warren have avoided each other at all costs.
But Warren and his BT broadcasters sent a public challenge to the competition last month in a bid to set up some mouth-watering cross- stable clashes.
A lunch date is in the diaries — yet Hearn remains suspicious and will refuse to hand his nemesis a slice of the pie he has worked so hard to bake.
Hearn said: “I don’t want to sound arrogant but we have been competitors for ten years and they have written us probably two dozen legal letters, complained about us to the Board and slagged us off.
“And now we are No 1 and they are struggling, so they want us to work together.
“I won’t be arrogant enough to say ‘f*** off’, so if it works for our broadcasters and fighters I will look at it. But personally I am happy with what we are doing.

Tyson Fury tells Floyd Mayweather he will ‘smash’ Deontay Wilder in trilogy fight – not matter what he teaches him

TYSON FURY told Floyd Mayweather he will “smash” Deontay Wilder in their trilogy fight – no matter what he teaches him.
Wilder, 34, was dominated last February as he surrendered his WBC title to Fury, 31, after two knockdowns and seven rounds of defeat.

Floyd Mayweather has offered to train Wilder
Afterwards, retired Mayweather – who has taken up coaching – announced his desire to train the Bronze Bomber to avenge defeat.
But Fury has warned the 43-year-old not to bother.
He tweeted: “No matter what you teach him, I will smash him.”
Mayweather toured the UK in February and was asked how Wilder could possibly win back the heavyweight title.

He responded: “If I train him. If I train him I can teach him how to win.”
Wilder was due to get his crack at revenge this summer but the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the heavyweight headliner.
Fury’s first WBC title defence then looked set for December, but without fans able to attend promoter Bob Arum admitted it could be backdated to 2021.
But that does not suit the Gypsy King, who has told his UK matchmaker Frank Warren to find him another opponent on home soil to keep busy.

Tyson Fury urged to fight WBC mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte in December if Deontay Wilder pulls out of trilogy

EDDIE HEARN urged Tyson Fury to face Dillian Whyte in December if Deontay Wilder “disappears”.
Fury, 31, dominated Wilder, 34, in February to clinch the WBC title and the pair are already signed to an immediate rematch.

    3

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder are signed to a trilogy bout

    3

Dillian Whyte is the WBC heavyweight mandatory challenger
But Whyte, 32, has been told he will face the winner should he beat Alexander Povetkin, 40.
Wilder has remained radio silent since his first career defeat, leading to fears he is questioning facing Fury off the back of his humbling loss this year.
And with Fury adamant he will fight before the year is out, Hearn wants the world champion to face mandatory challenger Whyte in a “monstrous” heavyweight headliner.
He told Sky Sports: “If Deontay Wilder does go missing, and Dillian Whyte wins, the WBC should just order that fight immediately.

“I heard people talking about, ‘Oh, Fury will definitely fight this year, Wilder or not’.
“If he’s going to fight and Wilder’s not around, why not fight your mandatory?
“Tyson Fury against Dillian Whyte is a monstrous fight, you’re talking about a couple million pay-per-view buys.
“Ot generates a huge amount of interest and money so why wouldn’t you take that fight?

    3

“I don’t believe Tyson Fury is running scared of Dillian Whyte, I think he thinks he’ll beat him.
“I think that’s a great option for him if Wilder disappears. My ear tells me he won’t disappear, it might be his only shot at getting his belt back.”
Despite Whyte’s mandatory status, Fury’s UK promoter Frank Warren warned the Gypsy King is only interested in facing Anthony Joshua.
The heavyweight champions have verbally agreed to a two-fight deal in 2021.
And Warren revealed Fury could even vacate the belt to get the super-fight with Joshua over the line.
But Hearn – who promotes AJ and Whyte – insisted the unified champion wants to win all four titles and reign as undisputed king.
Meaning if Fury opts against facing his mandatory challenger, Joshua could rematch Whyte for the vacant WBC crown.
Hearn told iFL TV,: “People said from Fury’s team, ‘We are not fighting Dillian Whyte.

Anthony Joshua to face Kubrat Pulev on December 5 or 12 as Eddie Hearn plans to approach government about fans returning

ANTHONY JOSHUA is in line to face Kubrat Pulev on December 5 or 12 as Eddie Hearn plans to approach the government about fans returning.
The unified champion, 30, has not fought since beating Andy Ruiz Jr, also 30, in Saudi Arabia last December.

He was due to defend his titles against 39-year-old Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev in June – until the coronavirus pandemic KO’d the heavyweight headliner.
But promoter Hearn reckons AJ could make his ring return by the end of the year – and possibly in front of his beloved supporter.
He told Sky Sports: “Firstly, anything can happen.
“But right now as we stand here the plan is Kubrat Pulev. We’re looking at December 5 or 12.

“I believe we can start approaching the government in September about starting to bring fans through the doors again.
“We believe that will happen in greater depth in October.”
Hearn already hinted the O2 Arena – where Joshua has not boxed since 2016 – was the front runner to host his comeback bout.
But whether a crowd is in attendance or not, the WBA, IBF and WBO king will not wait around, having been desperate to step between the ropes again.

Hearn said: “Anthony needs to fight.

Whyte faces Povetkin in a WBC title eliminator

A win for the Brit will guarantee him a shot at 31-year-old Tyson Fury’s WBC belt.
But AJ – who beat Povetkin in 2018 – is not confident old rival Whyte will get past the final hurdle standing in the way of his first world title shot.
Hearn told Sky Sports: “I don’t think AJ is the kind of guy to hope that Dillian Whyte will lose on Saturday.
“He actually, I think, believes that Alexander Povetkin will win on Saturday. I had a conversation with him the other day.

“This is a massive banana skin fight for Dillian Whyte.
“I don’t think Tyson Fury really feels too deeply about it, but of course in boxing, there’s so much bitterness.”

    3

Joshua, 30, became the first man to knock out Povetkin, following a shaky start against against the 40-year-old.
And despite secretly leaning towards the Russian, the unified champion has publicly backed Whyte to prevail in the heavyweight headliner tonight.

Joshua said: “Everyone has issues in training, if he [Whyte] trained right, he will come through.
“He is a fighter, Dillian. But Povetkin is a seriously skilled heavyweight – an Olympic gold medallist, a world champion whose only losses were against [Wladimir] Klitschko and me.

Deontay Wilder is ‘one of the worst boxers around’ and Tyson Fury should focus on Anthony Joshua, says raging Nigel Benn

NIGEL BENN has labelled Deontay Wilder “rubbish” ahead of the heavyweight’s trilogy fight against Tyson Fury.
The American was obliterated by Fury in their memorable February rematch, which ended after seven rounds of Gypsy King domination.

A third contest between the pair is set for later this year in Las Vegas.
But British veteran Benn, who won world titles in two divisions, reckons Fury is better suited to focusing on Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte.
The 56-year-old told Press Box PR: “I don’t know why Fury is having a third fight with Wilder.
“He needs fresh blood and that blood is Anthony Joshua or Dillian Whyte. ‍

‍”He beat Wilder easily, it’s a waste of time. Wilder has only got a puncher’s chance.
“He can’t outbox Fury, Fury is like a magician when it comes to movement. He holds Wilder’s card, he can see his punches coming.

“Wilder is like a windmill, he’s rubbish, he’s one of the worst boxers going.”
On Saturday night, Whyte continues his push towards a world title fight with a match-up against Alexander Povetkin.

Joshua, meanwhile, is still waiting on a new date for his clash with Kubrat Pulev before turning his attention to a two-fight deal with Fury.
    YOU’RE JO-KING
With boxing comebacks all the rage, Benn attempted his own return to the ring before suffering a shoulder injury last year.
Later this year will also see Mike Tyson, 54, pull on his gloves for a meeting with Roy Jones Jr, 51.
And Benn says he approached Jones Jr about a possible comeback, only to be turned down by the American.
