Dillian Whyte is not first boxer to be sucker-punched… now he must not let Povetkin loss KO title dream

YOU didn’t have to be a mind reader to know by the look on Dillian Whyte’s face that he was wondering: ‘What the hell hit me.’
Whyte, knocked out cold by Alexander Povetkin’s perfect left uppercut that exploded on his chin like a  sniper’s bullet, didn’t see it coming.

The punch was so  powerful it lifted his 18st frame off his feet and dumped him on his back in such a deep sleep, it’s a wonder he wasn’t snoring.
Last weekend in Brentwood, Whyte’s dream of challenging Tyson Fury, for his WBC world heavyweight title, was left in tatters.
Dillian appeared on his way to a comfortable win against the Russian, 40, when he became a victim of that boxing rarity — a devastating single KO blow.
It brought memories of other dramatic occasions I’ve seen when one shot  out of nowhere turns  certain victory into defeat.

Purists admire silky skills but for most there’s no more spine-tingling sight than someone  flattened  unexpectedly.
And perhaps most memorable of all was when 45-year-old George Foreman challenged unbeaten Michael Moorer — 19 years younger — for his WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles in  Las Vegas 26 years ago.

Moorer must have seen all the lights of Vegas flashing before he landed senseless on the canvas and Foreman celebrated becoming the oldest-ever world heavyweight champ.

Old man Foreman was having his head jabbed off while Moorer gave him a systematic beating.
Three judges had Moorer far ahead as they came out for the tenth and it looked  doubtful Foreman would make the final bell.

Little did we know Big George was seconds from history.
Moorer lost his focus and Foreman, seeing the opening, let fly with a right-hand bomb straight as an arrow that crashed against the champ’s jaw.
Moorer must have seen all the lights of Vegas flashing before he landed senseless on the canvas and  Foreman celebrated becoming the oldest-ever  world heavyweight champ.
Fourteen years before  I watched in disbelief as the WBA heavyweight crown changed hands in Knoxville, Tennessee.
John Tate’s first defence in front of his hometown fans saw him way ahead on points against the unheralded Mike Weaver.

    3

George Foreman was 45 and being outclassed when he KO’d Michael Moorer, 26 Credit: AFP
A tired and dispirited Weaver had never been 15 rounds.
With 55 seconds left of the final round he threw a desperate right cross.
It caught Tate right on the button and he crashed face down on the canvas,  out to the world, while Weaver celebrated.
The most heartbreaking Brit defeat I saw was when Herol Graham threw away the vacant WBC middleweight title against Julian Jackson in Spain 30 years ago.
Graham had brilliantly outclassed Jackson and  at the end of the third  Julian looked  beaten.
Everyone thought it was going to be stopped but his trainer persuaded the ref to give Jackson three more minutes.
All Herol had to do was jab and move but he tried to stop Jackson and the inevitable happened.
He left himself wide open and Jackson landed  a howitzer of a right on Graham’s chin and he was out like a light.

Anthony Joshua tells Tyson Fury he’ll ‘break his head’ within six rounds but respects rival as a ‘good family man’

ANTHONY JOSHUA warned Tyson Fury he wants to “break his head” within six rounds – but respects him for being “a good family man”.
The heavyweight champions have verbally agreed to a two-fight deal in 2021, with the war of words already underway.

    2

Joshua hailed his rival Fury for being a ‘good family man’
And with AJ’s dream of becoming undisputed champion on the line, he paid respect to Fury – but will take no prisoners after the first bell.
Joshua said on Sky Sports ‘A League of Their Own’: “I have a lot of respect for the man, he’s a good family man and a good fighter, but on the other hand, I want to break his head.”
Joshua, 30, and Fury, 32, have a clear path to face each other should they both win their next fights.
AJ defends his unified titles against Kubrat Pulev, 39, set for December, while Fury faces Deontay Wilder, 34, in an immediate rematch having dethroned the American in February.

Dillian Whyte, 32, has also momentarily been frozen out of the title picture after his shock loss to Alexander Povetkin, 40.
Whyte saw his WBC mandatory position go up in smoke having been knocked out, and will need to win back the chance to face Fury in a rematch against the Russian.
The shock defeat leaves the Gypsy King free to unify against Joshua next year.
But AJ is adamant he will do what Wilder failed to do and “take him out” – handing Fury the first loss of his career.

Dillian Whyte has made a career of ‘slagging off’ Fury, Joshua and Chisora so let them enjoy Povetkin KO, blasts Warren

DILLIAN WHYTE and his team need to stop crying about their Twitter trolls after he failed as British boxing’s boogieman.
The 32-year-old lost his WBC mandatory title shot on Saturday night after Alexander Povetkin bounced up after two knockdowns to detonate a magnificent uppercut on Whyte’s chin.

    2

Frank Warren hit out at Dillian Whyte after his defeat to Alexander Povetkin following the Body Snatcher’s digs at his fellow BritsCredit: ©Mark Robinson Ltd
A few rival heavyweights and thousands of online boxing fans seem to take pleasure in Whyte’s shock demise – including ringside commentator and long-time rival Anthony Joshua.
And trainer Dave Coldwell took to social media to launch a dramatic defence of his man.
But promoter Frank Warren has moved to remind Coldwell and Whyte of his previous.
Tyson Fury’s matchmaker told SunSport: “I saw Dave Coldwell’s little speech and it made me chuckle because Dillian has enjoyed having a go at everyone else.

“He’s always calling Tyson Fury – who went to Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder’s backyards as a huge underdog – a coward.
“He has made some serious slanderous accusations about Anthony Joshua being a drug cheat, including posting a video of the Verve song ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ after his loss to Andy Ruiz Jr.
“He’s talked about Ruiz Jr having his hardest fight against diabetes, when his hardest fight was at short notice against AJ because Dillian didn’t have the bottle to take it himself.
“And he has constantly called Derek Chisora a donkey despite him not kicking off a fuss when he was robbed in their first fight.

“If these fighters and fans have enjoyed Dillian’s defeat then it is only because he has made a career out of slagging others off.
“To put it very simply, what goes around, comes around.”
A part of Coldwell’s post read: “Look at the recent record of @dillianwhyte – opposition he CHOSE to fight knowing he’s in line for a crack at the World Title.
“Who has the bigger b****… him or the trolls?
“Who deserves more respect, win or lose.. him or the warriors of social media? Opinions are always welcome. Trolls, as always, can go get f***ed.”
But Team Whyte – including Coldwell – ordered in garish tracksuits two days before the fight in an effort to embarrass Team Povetkin, after their checkered choice of attire when they landed in the UK went viral.
And Warren wonders if they had been more concerned with their tactics, instead of trying to troll a 40-year-old ex-Olympic and world champion, whether they would still have been carrying their man out of the ring.
Warren, who was blocked by Whyte on Twitter today, said: “What was that tracksuit thing even all about, didn’t they have bigger things to worry about?

Dillian Whyte ‘hounding Eddie Hearn every day’ for Alexander Povetkin rematch which could take place in Russia

DILLIAN WHYTE has revealed he has been pestering Eddie Hearn about a rematch to face Alexander Povetkin following his shock defeat.
The Body Snatcher suffered a huge blow in his quest to fight for a world title after he was knocked out by the Russian at Fight Camp on Saturday.

But the 32-year-old – who has been embroiled in a war of words with promoter Frank Warren – intends to enforce an immediate rematch against the former WBA heavyweight champion.
Whyte looked on course for a routine victory after he floored the veteran boxer twice in the fourth round, only to be blown away by an uppercut a round later.
Despite a second professional loss, Whyte has insisted he has “never been more excited” for a fight as he looks ahead to their rematch.
He told Sky Sports: “I’m good and secondly I just want to say thanks to everyone, all the fans and all the support. It’s been amazing.

“I’ve never been this excited for a fight before in my life. I was excited for the first fight. Now, it’s like turning pro all over again. I’m buzzing.
“I want to go to training now. I’m forcing myself to take the two weeks’ rest. It’s all good. I learn quick. I just can’t wait to get back in there. I want to go now.
“I have been hounding Eddie every day to hear what they are saying about this rematch.”
    DILL ME IN
Before adding: “There’s certain moments in your career that does something to you. The loss to Anthony Joshua done something to me. This time, this has done something else to me again.

“It’s crazy, I feel young and youthful. I feel good. It’s [Povetkin rematch] probably going to be the end of November, early December, so let’s see.”
A rematch could take place in Povetkin’s native Russia, after the WBC Diamond champ’s team teased a fight in Eastern Europe.
In quotes obtained by RT, Povetkin’s manager Andrey Ryabinksiy said: “I don’t see such a big difference boxing here or in the UK.

Tyson Fury posts hilarious meme of him taking ‘bum’ Anthony Joshua to school in taunt to rival ahead of fight

TYSON FURY mocked “bum” Anthony Joshua with a meme of him “taking his rival to school”.
The heavyweight champions have already verbally agreed a two-fight deal for 2021.

    2

Tyson Fury mocked Anthony Joshua with a meme of him taking his rival to school
And ahead of their potential undisputed title decider, Fury taunted his rival by indirectly telling Joshua he has superior skills.
He captioned the hilarious post: “Happy Wednesday.”
In the picture, a mocked up image of AJ asks while holding the far bigger Gypsy King’s hand: “Where are you taking me?”
Fury responds: “To school, you bum.”

The social media jibe garnered mixed reaction from opposing fans, who are divided on who will emerge victorious.

The Battle of Britain had come under threat after the WBC mandated the winner between Fury and Deontay Wilder, 34, – signed for this year – to face Dillian Whyte.
But Whyte’s hopes of finally challenging for the heavyweight crown went up in smoke after he was knocked out by 40-year-old Alexander Povetkin.
Whyte, 32, has the chance to enact revenge against Povetkin in a rematch.

And Fury has told Joshua to “stop running away” now his mandatory duties have momentarily been erased.

Dillian Whyte given 28-day medical suspension after Povetkin’s brutal KO as Frank Warren fears he’s rushing rematch

DILLIAN WHYTE has been given a 28-day medical suspension after his brutal knock out by Alexander Povetkin.
It puts him out of action and unable to spar for four weeks, with the British Board of Boxing Control able to impose the ban on any fighter who has been stopped from punches.

    2

Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn insists it does not affect plans for a rapid rematch, which is targeted for the end of the year, with Whyte having already planning for a short rest period.
Hearn told Boxing Social: “Dillian has to go at the end of November at the latest.
“That would mean a three week rest now and getting back into camp.
“He’s physically fine, we know it was a bad knockout and there will be a 28-day suspension which won’t really affect this fight.”

Whyte – who was controlling the fight – saw his WBC mandatory position go up in smoke after being stopped for the second time in his career.
The Brit banger was caught by a Povetkin uppercut that left him sparko on the canvas.

    2

He now has the chance to win back his right to challenge Tyson Fury, 32, by enacting revenge of veteran Povetkin, 40.
But rival matchmaker Frank Warren fears the beaten 32-year-old is being rushed back into a rerun too soon – a decision he calls “crazy”.

Warren said to talkSPORT: “I’m a bit surprised they’re talking about trying to get it on in November.
“Straight away when you get knocked out, the British Boxing Board of Control give a minimum 28/30 days before you can even get back into the gym and resume sparring.

Dillian Whyte’s boxing career ‘on the line’ after shocking Alexander Povetkin KO, warns Tony Bellew

TONY BELLEW warned Dillian Whyte’s career is on the line when he rematches Alexander Povetkin.
Whyte surrendered his WBC mandatory position after Povetkin, 40, pulled off an upset by knocking out the 32-year-old.

    3

Tony Bellew believes if the fight goes late it favours Fury
He has the chance to enact revenge against the former champion and win back his right to challenge Tyson Fury, 32, in a rerun targeted for November.
But Bellew believes there is more at stake than just a heavyweight ranking when Whyte risks back-to-back defeats by immediately rematching Povetkin.
He told talkSPORT: “I definitely believe Dillian Whyte will still get to the final destination and become a heavyweight champion of the world.
“Just the right opponents at the right time. We’ve gotta remember, 1,000 days he’s been waiting to challenge for the WBC world title.

“And for 800 of them days Deontay Wilder’s been the world champion – a man who didn’t want to face Dillian Whyte, didn’t wanna know.

    3

“He was facing taxi drivers instead of facing Dillian Whyte.
“It’s wrong what’s been done to the lad, but he’s now in this very strange position where he’s gotta go into the rematch and his career is on the line.
“I believe Dillian will beat Povetkin. I think he needs to go in there and perform basically the same.

“Just, when you go in for the final finish, you’ve got to be alert and aware.”
Whyte had been ordered to face the winner between Fury and 34-year-old Deontay Wilder – who are signed to a trilogy bout.
Wilder had remained radio silent since losing the belt to the Gypsy King in February.
