Roy Jones Jr looking sharp on pads aged 51 as boxing legend prepares for Mike Tyson showdown fight

ROY JONES JR looked sharp on the pads as the 51-year-old prepared to face Mike Tyson.

And Jones Jr, 51, showed he still has the skills required to succeed with his blistering pace on the pads in a video he posted to Instagram.
Working with coach Tom Yankello, Jones Jr was put through his paces at the World Class Boxing Gym in Pittsburgh.
Not everyone is favour of the clash between the two boxing legends with a combined age of 105.
Former world heavyweight champ Tyson, 54, has a natural size advantage over Jones – who traditionally competed in lower divisions.

And Tyson’s former conqueror Danny Williams warned about the consequences of a potential mismatch.
He told rt.com: “I think Roy is going to get seriously hurt. He is a natural middleweight.”
Jones recently opened up on the struggles he has had to overcome in his life.
He revealed he battled suicidal thoughts in his younger years but is now “a killer”.

Deontay Wilder in ‘amazing physical shape’ ahead of Tyson Fury trilogy fight, says his protege Raphael Akpejiori

DEONTAY WILDER is in ‘amazing physical shape’ ahead of a third fight with Tyson Fury, according to his protege Raphael Akpejiori.
The Bronze Bomber was beaten up by Fury, 32, in their second fight in February but is blitzing himself in the gym ahead of the scheduled trilogy clash in December.

Nigerian Raphael Akpejiori has been guided by Deontay Wilder

Wilder, 34, has been mentoring Nigerian heavyweight prospect Akpejiori and he could spar the 29-year-old in preparation for The Gypsy King.
The former WBC champ has upped his training regime in Miami.
He is being looked after by the same coach who drills former University of Miami basketball and American football star Akpejiori.
Akpejiori told Sky Sports: “Based on what I know, the only person that can beat Deontay right now, is Deontay.

“He will beat Fury if he sticks to the game plan from his coaching staff, and I know that he has all the physical tools.
“Right now he is in amazing physical shape, that I can tell you for sure.
“You will see a completely different Deontay, mentally and physically in the ring, when that bell rings again for that third fight. That I can tell you.
Wilder surrendered his WBC crown after suffering a seventh-round stoppage against Fury in Las Vegas.

His corner controversially threw in the towel after Wilder was dropped twice by the man from Morecambe.
Many thought Fury had done enough to win the first fight in December 2018 on points but the judges ruled it a draw after The Gypsy King miraculously got off the canvas in the 12th round.
He made sure it didn’t go the distance second time round but Wilder’s sparring parter has since claimed The Bronze Bomber carried a bicep injury into the fight.
But Akpejiori denied he is struggling with his physical condition and added: “You’re going to have to wait for Deontay to break it down and address those rumours.
“Listen, I can tell you from my conversations with Deontay that he was ready to fight Tyson Fury in July.
“The only reason why he didn’t fight Tyson Fury in July, was because the fight was moved due to the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown that came after that.
“He does the same workouts that we’ve been doing. I don’t know how somebody can be injured and do all that. It’s really hard stuff, I can tell you that for sure.”

The Alabama fighter immediately opted to take up his rematch clause against Fury but Covid-19 put pay to chances of getting a fight on this summer.
Yet promoter Bob Arum is ‘optimistic’ the two will fight on December 19 in front of 10,000-15,000 fans in the 65,000 capacity new Raiders Stadium in the US.
Akpejiori made it clear Wilder – who has advised him since 2017 – is still ‘very hungry’ to reclaim his belts from Englishman Fury.
He said: “Oh yeah, he definitely is. You can really tell that’s all he’s thinking about, from just talking.
“We talk about a whole lot of other things, personal stuff, boxing promotional stuff.
“But concerning fighting Tyson Fury, he’s extremely confident. He’s very excited about that third fight.
“I can tell you for sure that he’s very hungry, and he’s trying to get back into the ring as soon as possible.
“He’s in great spirits, excited to get back to fight Tyson Fury.”

The American is set to duel with Roy Jones Jr in November

Rafael Cordeiro has been overseeing Tyson’s preparations for the fight and was almost put in a coma for his troubles.
Footage posted online by FightHype showed Iron Mike hammering his padded-up trainer with brutal punches.
On more than one occasion, Tyson, 54, takes a swipe near Cordeiro’s head – earning a stern look from his coach.
Cordeiro is no stranger to facing a barrage of blows, from his fighting days as Brazil’s Muay Thai champion with an MMA record of four wins and two defeats.

And fans were left fearing for the safety of Jones Jr, 51, in the upcoming bout.
Adrien wrote online: “Tyson still almost annihilating his trainers In his 50’s lmao. This better be for charity and Tyson doesn’t let his full power fly, or we might be needing a body bag for my boy Roy.”

Jay added: “This dude is definitely gonna break Roy’s ribs.”
Mikey commented: “Rafael Cordeiro almost got his head taken off!!!”

While David pondered: “Damn I think Roy should think this over.”
Officially speaking, California State Commission rules state that both fighters will not look for the knockout in November, instead “exhibiting” their skills.

The social media site Triller will be airing the fight.
It will be on a pay-per-view basis, with reports the event will cost $49.99.
It’s set to be an all-star night as artists such as Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Wayne, The Weeknd and Pitbull are going to be performing.
What TV channel will be Tyson vs Jones Jr be on?
The fight is unlikely to be streamed on TV in the UK, opting instead to be on put on live stream through social media app Triller.

What are the rules of the fight?
The fight will be contested over eight, three-minute rounds.

No headguards will be worn but the fighters will be wearing larger 12-ounce gloves.
Technically the fight can only be stopped if there is a knock-out, but California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Forster said he will stop it as soon as a cut appears.
Forster said: “Tyson and Jones Jr. won’t be wearing headgear for the fight. They’ll be lacing up 12-ounce gloves and there won’t be any judges present at the fight to score the action. So, technically, there won’t be a winner unless a knockout somehow occurs, or either fighter is deemed unfit to continue.
“They can move around and make some money, but I told them if you get cut, it’s over.”

    3

Roy Jones Jr, 51, last fought only two years ago
    What have they said?
Mike Tyson: “We’re throwing punches at each other. This is going to be my definition of fun … broken eye sockets, broken jaw, broken rib. That’s fun to me.”
Roy Jones Jr: “He’s still Mike Tyson, he’s still one of the strongest, most explosive people who ever touched a boxing ring. If anything, I made a mistake going in with him. He’s the bigger guy, he’s the explosive guy. He’s going to have all the first-round fireworks, not me. I do have first-round fireworks, but he’s known for more first-round fireworks than anybody to ever touch boxing, other than maybe George Foreman.” More

Dillian Whyte refuses to make changes to team and style as Povetkin rematch with fight announced for 21 November

DILLIAN WHYTE insists he does not need to make major changes to exact rematch revenge on Alexander Povetkin on November 21.
The Brixton heavyweight made a great start against the 41-year-old Russian on August 22, flooring him twice in promoter Eddie Hearn’s Essex garden.

    3

Dillian Whyte is looking for revenge after his fifth round defeat to Alexander Povetkin

    3

Povetkin was floored twice in the initial fight but found a way to win with a stunning KO

But the Body Snatcher was knocked spark out by a lethal fifth-round uppercut and lost his mandatory challenger status for Tyson Fury’s WBC crown.
The shock loss was his first fight under new trainer Xavier Miller – with Dave Coldwell drafted in as a late assistant – after splitting with long-time coach Mark Tibbs during lockdown.
But Whyte, 32, believes he does not need to make drastic changes for the must-win rerun and that just a little more concentration is key.
Speaking from his Portugal training camp, Whyte said: “I’m over the moon to have the rematch.

“As soon as I got out of the ring, I was looking for confirmation that the fight would be on. I can’t wait to get back in the ring and get back what is rightfully mine.
“I’m looking to do what I said I would the first time and that’s beat Alexander Povetkin.
“There won’t be any major adjustments but I just need to be more switched on and not get distracted. He was able to use his experience against me.”

    3

Eddie Hearn’s immaculate Essex garden hosted the first fight after Covid-restrictions left the promoter with few options
The three-month turnaround is rapid, especially after serving a 28-day medical suspension from the British Boxing Board of Control.

But Whyte reckons the same ruthless mindset and gameplan will help him avenge only the second defeat of his career.
He said: “I will be a lot more focused and sharper in the rematch.
“I’m coming to win and knock him out. I’m coming to even the score and the only way to do that is by knocking him out.”
Povetkin welcomed his second baby to the world during his training camp and twice climbed off the canvas after taking a couple of Whyte’s best shots in the initial bout.
So the Soviet slugger is even more confident of returning to the UK for another payday.

The Body Snatcher was dropped by his Russian opponent in the fifth round of their encounter last month.
Whyte, 32, had the upper hand in the fight having sent Povetkin to the canvas TWICE in the previous round.
But the heavyweight contest came to the most dramatic of conclusions when Whyte was sparked out with a single, devastating uppercut.
The WBC’s No1 contender for over 1,000 days quickly exercised his rematch clause.

And even in the post-fight media was urging Eddie Hearn to get the rematch on before the end of the year.
He will be desperate to avenge his first loss since 2015 – a win second time round would return him to the position of WBC mandatory challenger.
Whyte insisted he has ‘never been more excited’ for a fight ahead of the rematch with Povetkin.
The Brixton Banger has already shared videos of himself back in the gym this month after taking a minimum two-week rest following his defeat.

Tyson, 54, apparently wanted to face Floyd Mayweather Jr.
But after an incredible body transformation, he will take on 51-year-old Jones Jr instead.
Boxing fans can’t wait to see the pair in action.
And Tyson’s opponent Jones Jr admits he had to get past some tough mental blocks in his youth to become the man he is today.

Jones Jr told the Mail: “Yes it’s true. It was because of the pressure from my father.
“I thought if I got to take this, I’m gonna be dead, but then I talked to God.
“And I said, ‘Well, if I’m doing it, because this is how you want me to be, you want me to succeed at something, but it’s part of the process then I got to stay and keep up’.”
Jones Jr also insists he is now a “killer” and ready to do some damage, adding: “Nothing wrong with my father’s parenting skills, because my father wanted to prepare me to be the best at what I do.
