Greatest nicknames in boxing including ‘Macho’ Camacho, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ and Owen ‘What the Heck’ Beck

THE sport of boxing is littered with fighting nicknames, from the majestic to the bizarre.
Some of the greatest boxers are best known by their nicknames, from “Smokin” Joe Frazier to “Iron” Mike Tyson.

There are also plenty of lesser-known fighters who are punching above their weight with standout nicknames.
Here’s a list of some of the greatest names in the sport.
    Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao
Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is the first man in boxing to win world championships in eight different weight classes and has held four recognized world titles in those divisions.
He was voted the Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring Magazine on three separate occasions.

“Pacman” beat and fought the biggest names of his generation, including Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather.
Pacquiao’s unprecedented run turned him into an international star and a hero in his home country of the Philippines.
    Samuel ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Peter
Known for his punching power and holding a 78.9 percent knockout-to-win ratio, Samuel Peter was known as “The Nigerian Nightmare” for a reason.
The slugger burst on the heavyweight scene at a time when the division desperately needed some new blood.

In 2005, he lost a unanimous decision to future heavyweight champion Wladimir’s Kitschoko despite the Ukrainian being dropped three times.
The duo had a rematch three years later, but this time Peter lost decisively by knockout in the 10th-round.
“The Nigerian Nightmare” would finally capture the WBC heavyweight title in 2008, when he defeated Oleg Maskaev.
    ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson
“Iron” Mike Tyson entered the heavyweight division in the mid-1980s, boasting devastating power, speed and ferocity that intimidated many of his opponents.
In 1986, Tyson was crowned the WBC heavyweight champion after he defeated the champ Trevor Berbik by TKO.

At the age of 20, he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history, and became the first heavyweight fighter to unify the IBF, WBA and WBC titles.
With all his accolades, Tyson was dubbed the “Baddest Man on the Planet,” capping off his career with 44 knockout wins.
‘The Explosive Thin Man’ Alexis Arguello
Nicaraguan Alexis Arguello was one of the most devastating punchers in boxing, earning him the nickname “The Explosive Thin Man.”
Arguello was a three-time world champion and is one of the few fighters to have never lost his titles in the ring.

All of his championships were forfeited when he moved to a higher weight class to pursue a new challenge.
He went on to compete in five weight classes during a successful career: bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight.
    Thomas ‘The Hitman’ Hearns
When it comes to great boxing nicknames look no further than Thomas Hearns.
Whether it’s the well-known “Hitman” or the “Motor City Cobra,” there is little doubt Hearns earned both.
He was one of the most feared boxers of his generation and fought all the greats of his era.

    16

“The Hitman” won world championships in five weight classes, from welterweight all the way up to light heavyweight.
He stepped into the ring with greats such as Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Haler.
His two fights against Sugar Ray are considered to be among the greatest in boxing history, while the opening round against Hagler in 1985 is arguably the most brutal ever witnessed in the sport.
    Michael ‘Second To’ Nunn
Former middleweight champ Michael “Second To” Nunn was a standout amateur boxer before turning professional.
He won world titles at middleweight and super middleweight, and had a few showdowns at light heavyweight.
Nunn was a slick 6’2 southpaw who packed a heavy punch.

He was a force in the middleweight division in the mid-1980s and into the 90s.
In 1988, he dominated Frank Tate to win his first IBF middleweight title.
In 2004, after retiring from the sport, he was sentenced to 24 years on drug trafficking charges.
‘The Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya
There are few fighters who have hit the heights like Oscar De La Hoya.
“The Golden Boy” is regarded as the man who put boxing “back on its feet” when he cracked the scene in the early 1990s – and continued to change the sport after his retirement through his Golden Boy Promotions company.

    16

De La Hoya won Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, which earned him his famous nickname.
Throughout his illustrious career, De La Hoya defeated 17 world champions, won 10 world titles in six weight classes and became the highest grossing fighter in history.
    Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho
Hector “Macho” Camacho was known in the ring for his quickness, bizarre dress and flamboyant style.
“Macho” competed in seven weight classes from super featherweight all the way up to super middleweight.

The Puerto Rican won his first world title by way of a fifth-round knockout over former champ Rafael Limon in 1983.
During the late 1980s and early 90s, Camacho had notable fights against Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Jose Luis Ramirez and an over faded Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard.
“Macho” died in 2012 after he was shot while sitting in a car outside a bar in his native Bayamon.
    Owen ‘What the Heck’ Beck
During the mid-2000s, Owen Beck was a solid fighter in the heavyweight division, although never one of the greats.
Every time he stepped into the ring against a decent opponent Beck tended to lose.

    16

He challenged for the world title once in his career, which ended in a fifth-round knockout loss to Nikolai Valuev in 2006.
Towards the end of his career – having lost his last eight fights – Beck became more of a journeyman.
Still, there’s no doubting the greatest of his nickname: Owen “What the Heck” Beck.
    ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler
“Marvelous” Marvin Hagler became the dominant force in the middleweight division in the early 1970s.
He reached the pinnacle of the division in 1980 when he was crowned the WBA, WBC and The Ring middleweight champion after his win against Alan Minter.
Hagler consistently ranks among the top five middleweights of all time – and is remembered for a highly controversial decision loss to “Sugar” Ray Leonard in 1987.

    16

The fight was close with both boxers landing an equal number of shots, but Hagler was the more aggressive.
The split-decision verdict for Leonard remains highly debated, with many calling the victory for Hagler.
    ‘Manos De Piedra’ Roberto Duran
Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran is one of the most iconic nicknames in all of sport, attached to a man widely considered the greatest lightweight to ever step foot in the ring.
Duran won world titles in four weight classes: lightweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight.

    16

A brawler in the ring, Duran’s most notable performances came against Sugar Ray Leonard, who he spectacularly defeated in a 15-round decision at “the Brawl in Montreal” in 1980.
The rematch later that year became the infamous “No Mas” moment when Duran inexplicably quit in the eighth round of a very close fight.
    Mike ‘The Bodysnatcher’ McCallum
Mike “The Bodysnatcher” McCallum dominated the light middleweight division during the mid-1980s.
McCallum earned his nickname due to his ability to land vicious body punches.

    16

He won the junior middleweight title in 1984 and successfully defended his belt seven times before moving to middleweight.
His first crack at the middleweight championship was unsuccessful, but he would eventually be crowned champion in 1990.
A slick and hard-hitting McCallum secured his third world title in a third weight class after winning the WBC light heavyweight championship.
    ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier
“Smokin” Joe Frazier was both an Olympic gold medalist and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
During his legendary career he defeated many of the top heavyweights, including Jerry Quarry, Buster Mathis, Eddie Machen and Jimmy Ellis.

    16

His most famous victory came in 1971, when he was the first boxer to defeat Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden by a clear-cut unanimous decision.
Dubbed “The Fight of the Century,” Frazier sent Ali to the hospital with a broken jaw.
“Smoking” Joe would lose his titles two years later to the knockout artist George Foreman.
    ‘The Brown Bomber’ Joe Louis
Known as “The Brown Bomber,” Joe Louis is considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, even better than Muhammad Ali.
Louis held the world heavyweight championship for a record 140 months – nearly 12 years.
During his reign, he made a record 25 successful title defenses.

Coming to the fore in the early 1930s, Louis packed devastating punching power and is credited with becoming one of the the first African-American cultural icons in the United States.
    ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali
“The Greatest” Muhammad Ali was simply one of the best fighters to ever set foot in a boxing ring.
He was a fighter, an icon and a symbol of the anti-war movement that seized the nation in the late 1960s.
In 1967, Ali, who had been the world champion for three years, refused the draft for the Vietnam War and was stripped of both titles and his boxing license.

Lucas Browne ‘more than willing’ to welcome Tyson Fury back to UK in December with Deontay Wilder trilogy facing the axe

LUCAS BROWNE is ‘more than willing’ to welcome Tyson Fury back to the UK in December with the Deontay Wilder trilogy facing the axe.
Fury has grown tired of waiting for a date to face Wilder for a third time, and has announced his intention to move on.

With UK promoter Frank Warren under instructions to find the WBC champion an opponent for the end of the year, Browne has thrown his hat into the ring.
He said on Twitter: “Wake up this morning to the awesome news that Tyson Fury is possibly looking at myself as the number one candidate for a fight in December.
“The Fury and Wilder fight is no longer happening and he wants some kind of warm up fight for the Joshua fight.
“Now, if that is me, I’d be more than willing to jump in, it would be an absolute honour to jump in the ring with the Gypsy King, who I believe is one of the best heavyweights on the planet at the moment.

“In saying that, wouldn’t it be awesome for me to knock him out and have all these fans hate me at the same time. That’s something I’d love to happen.
“As I said, it would be an absolute honour to share the ring with him, I would be going in there to knock him out, that would be the plan.
“I could be losing 11 rounds and still knock you out with one punch in the 12th and that’s why I am always going to be dangerous no matter what.”

Browne, 41, continued: “Tyson Fury, thank you very much for the consideration, I do hope it comes off.

“I am training and waiting for a fight. Covid has obviously put a stop to a lot of things at the moment and hopefully this could be something that really changes my life as well.”
The humble call out follows news Fury, 32, is set to snub a trilogy bout against Wilder, 34, having dethroned the American in February, having drawn in December 2018.
They had been set to fight once more before the year’s out, but with the coronavirus pandemic preventing live crowds, it has so far failed to materialise.
Wilder did enact his right to a contractual rematch, but the delay may force the stipulation to expire.

    2

Fury has already agreed a two-fight deal with unified champion Anthony Joshua, 30, who faces Kubrat Pulev, 39, in December.
The Gypsy King wants a homecoming tune-up the same month before focussing his plans on an undisputed title decider with AJ.
But, SunSport understands neither Fury nor Wilder has informed the WBC of any plans to cancel their third showdown.
Fury and WBC boss Maurico Sulaiman appear to have a close friendship, following emotional encounters in the ring after each Wilder clash.
Wilder’s co-promoter Al Haymon also appears to have a close working relationship with the organisation, with a number of his high-profile talents holding their honours.

Muhammad Ali was SCARED to fight Mike Tyson because he feared punching power, George Foreman reveals

GEORGE FOREMAN has revealed that Muhammad Ali once admitted to him that he didn’t believe he could’ve beaten Mike Tyson in his prime.
Widely considered to be the two greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, many have passionately speculated as to who would have won if they’d met in their primes.

The brand new book features amazing stories about the legendary fighter

Muhammad Ali Jr believes that his father would have “kicked Tyson’s butt”… but the man himself wasn’t so sure.
Ali’s Rumble in the Jungle rival Foreman has made the revelation that Ali wasn’t so sure he’d have been able to beat the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ in his pomp.
Speaking to Fiaz Rafiq for his brand new book, Muhammad Ali: The Life of a Legend, Foreman made the stunning declaration.
He said: “Muhammad Ali told me himself.

“I said to him, ‘Do you think Tyson could beat anybody?’
“He said, ‘Man, Tyson hits so hard.’
“He felt Tyson hit harder than anyone he’d faced.
“He told me once that he didn’t have the confidence he could have beaten Mike Tyson.”

Veteran promoter Don King, who worked with both legendary fighters, also gives his opinion on comparisons between the pair in the brand new book.
The 88-year-old says: “They were both great heavyweights. Muhammad Ali had the blinding speed and he was a dancer in the ring. He was a fighter.
“He was a combination of things. He was emulating and imitating Sugar Ray Robinson, who was one of his idols.
“Ray Robinson, I think, was the best boxer of all time.
“Muhammad Ali made a heavyweight look like a middleweight the way he was fighting. Then he would coin all of his phrases and predictions.
“They would become exciting up to the countdown to see it. The people hated him or loved him.”
King, who was behind the promotions of the Rumble in the Jungle and Thrilla in Manilla, also had plenty to say on Tyson.
He continued: “Mike Tyson had awesome, devastating power.

Mike Tyson, same thing – love him or hate him. But he was the menacing, devastating guy that wants to punch you so hard and put your nose up your brain.
    Don King

“He was not the boxer that would be boxing and laughing – he was menacing. He was the guy that came in that they feared. You would be shivering in your bones. He would go out and seek and destroy.
“Ali would go another way. He would win with his skill, charm and wit.
“So these two guys were both great fighters. Mike Tyson, same thing – love him or hate him. But he was the menacing, devastating guy that wants to punch you so hard and put your nose up your brain.
“He was the kind of guy not to be loved like a guy like Muhammad Ali ended up being.
“But it was not that Ali wasn’t in the beginning, because he was excoriated and vilified, but he was still at a time when he was making a move to become recognised by people.”
The late, great Ali, who passed away in 2016, fought for the final time in 1981 – four years prior to Tyson lacing up the gloves professionally.
Of 61 professional fights, Ali won 56 – with three of his five defeats coming in his final four fights.
And of those losses, only those to Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick – who in a twist of fate was to be beaten by Tyson five years later with the WBC title on the line – in the final year of his career weren’t later avenged in subsequent rematches.

Dave Allen reveals texts with Tyson Fury over December fight before Anthony Joshua after Wilder trilogy collapsed

The move has sparked discussion over who Fury, 32, might face.
And Allen, 28, has spoken of his hopes of facing the Gypsy King if he downs Christian Hammer later this month.
He said in an Instagram clip: “I text Tyson half an hour ago.
“And I went, ‘If I beat Hammer… Let’s do it like Rocky I, give me a shot’.

“He text me and said, ‘Beat Hammer and you get a big fight’.
“And I said, ‘Is that a maybe?’ So you never know.”
Doncaster-born Allen faces Romania’s Hammer after downing Dorian Darch last time out, with David Price the only man to beat him in two years.
Fury was set for a trilogy meeting with Wilder, 34, in Las Vegas having grabbed his world title belt in a convincing February victory.

But the Brit has now called the contest off.
He told The Athletic: “I was looking forward to smashing Wilder again. A quick and easy fight.
“But Wilder and his team were messing around with the date. They don’t really want to fight the lineal heavyweight champion.”
Promoter Frank Warren backed up Fury’s claim, stating that a mega unification battle against Anthony Joshua is being eyed for 2021.
He told talkSPORT: “Tyson has said enough is enough, he is not going to wait longer and he will fight in London in December.
“That is what will happen. We haven’t finalised who it will be or anything yet, but that is what will happen.

Tyson Fury confirms Deontay Wilder fight is OFF and ‘I’ve moved on’ to face Anthony Joshua in blockbuster 2021 clash

TYSON FURY has confirmed that he has ditched his planned trilogy fight against Deontay Wilder.
The Gypsy King claimed organisers failed to deliver a date for the event in 2020 and he is now free to deliver an all-British heavyweight unification showdown with Anthony Joshua next year.

The Gypsy King’s move has paved the way for an undisputed heavyweight championship bout with Anthony Joshua in 2021

He told the Athletic: “I was looking forward to smashing Wilder again. A quick and easy fight.
“But Wilder and his team were messing around with the date. They don’t really want to fight the lineal heavyweight champion.
“They know how it ends. The world knows how it will end: with Wilder on his ass again.
“Then they asked me if I would agree to push it to December. I agreed to Dec 19.

“Then they tried to change the date again into next year. I’ve been training. I’m ready. When they tried moving off Dec 19 and pushing to next year, enough was enough. I’ve moved on.
“I am the best fighter in the world. The lineal heavyweight champion. The two-time Ring magazine heavyweight champion. The WBC heavyweight champion.
“And before the end of 2021, I will be the only man on this earth with a heavyweight championship belt.”
Fury’s annoucement comes just a day after his promoter Bob Arum confirmed the plan was for the WBC king to fight in the UK in December, then face AJ in April or May 2021.

Wilder and his team were messing around with the date. They don’t really want to fight the lineal heavyweight champion. They know how it ends. The world knows how it will end: with Wilder on his ass again.

When asked if the Gypsy King would be fighting Wilder, he told talkSPORT: “That’s up to Tyson because if we can’t, as appears to be the case, put on Wilder vs Fury this year, Tyson wants to keep busy and we are going to accommodate him.
“Then next year, assuming Joshua beats Pulev, we can look forward to a Fury vs Joshua fight.”
However, SunSport can reveal that Fury’s attempt to scrap the Wilder trilogy has not been ratified by the WBC.
The undefeated British ace dethroned the American in February to secure the iconic green and gold belt.

But Wilder’s team claim there is no truth to the ‘expired contract’ line and the bout is going ahead as planned.
The WBC has been a staunch supporter of Fury’s, sanctioning his original shock December 2018 bid for their title after he had gone three years without a competitive fight – that ended in a controversial draw.
The Mexico-based body also stood firmly by the Morecambe man when he was briefly accused of tampering with an Anti-Doping case in March.
But SunSport understands neither Fury nor Wilder has informed the WBC of any plans to cancel their third showdown.
And, most significantly, the sanctioning giant has not given their blessing for Fury to defend his title against any other fighter in December.
Fury and WBC boss Maurico Sulaiman appear to have a close friendship, following emotional meetings in the ring after each Wilder clash.

But Wilder’s co-promoter Al Haymon also appears to have a close working relationship with the organisation, with a number of his high-profile talents holding their honours.
Fury’s UK promoter Frank Warren said on Saturday: “I don’t know if that fight can get on this year.
“Promoters on both sides, we have worked very hard to make it happen, but it’s looking like it will not happen.
“There’s talk about it happening next year. Tyson has been training like a lot of guys solidly since February, and he wants to fight this year.
“My concern is Tyson’s welfare and well-being, and delivering what he wants, so he will fight this year.
“Contractual commitments are what they are, but contracts do not go on forever, and if the fight cannot be delivered within the contractual period, Tyson will move on and maybe revisit the fight another time.”

Now the two are in line to fight for real in an all-British unification fight.
It comes after the heavyweight champions verbally agreed to a two-fight deal for next year.
Joshua and Fury have shared the ring before, in 2010, when the Gypsy King was 22 and preparing to face Derek Chisora for the first time – with Joshua a 20-year-old amateur.

Soon after their spar, in a candid interview with journalist Steve Bunce, Fury admitted Joshua “gave me a beating” for three rounds – and predicted the unified champion’s future stardom.
He said: “He’s very good. To be honest with you, I thought to myself ‘I’m only going to take it easy as he’s an amateur and we probably won’t spar again if I go mad.
“He’s rushed out at me he threw a one-two and left-hook and I slipped, slipped and I thought he’s not very good I’m going to take my time.
“Then bash, he hits me with a big uppercut right on the point of the chin – if I had a bit of a weak chin like David Price I would’ve been knocked out for a month.

    AN ABSOLUTE CON
Tyson thinks UFC is ‘sexy’ but McGregor & Co will never earn what boxers do

“He’s very, very good and only young, 20, watch out for that name Anthony Joshua he is one prospect for the future.
“He came out at me for three rounds and he gave me a beating – I’m not going to deny it, he gave me hell for leather.
“For three rounds I thought ‘Oh my god, an amateur is killing me’.
“Being a professional, and I’ve been an amateur myself and fought all over the world, I slowed him down a bit with a few good body shots.
“The kid’s only 20, and I’m a handful myself, so for him to put up a good performance like that against a top prospect in me, I think he’s one for the future.”
AJ explained: “I was just in the gym to avoid getting punched if I was found guilty for one of my court cases.

“Tyson Fury came down, my coach told me this was the guy from the paper and if he is knocked out, you get a Rolex watch.
“I wasn’t even in to Rolex watches back then, I was rocking Casios!
“I was young and we just went to war really. He’s a gypsy warrior, hungry and that’s it – just a good, all out heavyweight sparring session.”
It seems Fury himself had a change of heart about what happened ten years ago.

Speaking to Showtime before he drew against Wilder, the Manchester slickster maintained Joshua had success in the early rounds, but was left squealing from body shots later on.
Fury said: “We’ve had a spar before – amateur boxer he was at the time – he had a good couple of rounds then I started hitting him round the body.

He came out at me for three rounds and he gave me a beating – I’m not going to deny it, he gave me hell for leather.

“He was lifting his legs up in the corner, there were 10 people in the gym who saw it.
“I’m there with my hands down, he’s coming forward with big swings, how’s he going to hit me? I said go on then, put one on me, I’ll stand still.”
Fury even claims he offered to have a street fight with AJ – but the Watford ace “s*** himself”.
He revealed: “He seems pretty spirited, doesn’t he?
“But when I stood face-to-face to him and said, ‘Do you want to get outside?’ His a*** started flapping.
    “He s*** himself.

Tyson Fury accepts Anthony Joshua’s offer to help him spar for Deontay Wilder fight
“It doesn’t matter what weight I was at the time, I wasn’t in shape, but I’d have took him outside and kicked his c*** right in for him.
“If a man said that to me – I don’t care if I was unfit or not – he’d be outside and punches. We’d have had to have a fight. Simple.
“But I said that to him and he didn’t want to know.”

Muhammad Ali was SCARED to fight Mike Tyson because of his feared punching power, George Foreman reveals

TYSON FURY is motivating his fans to ‘get up and out’ after raising awareness of World Mental Health Day with a poem about addiction.

He has since bounced back to be crowned WBC champion, citing daily exercise as the catalyst to his recovery.
And Fury wants to encourage his 3.8million Instagram followers to follow in his footsteps by getting their running shoes on.
He uploaded a video jogging across Morecambe bay and said: “Morning everybody, a nice little fat burner on a Sunday morning. A bit of motivation.
“Get up, get your running gear on and get on the road. You’ll feel much better. Just do a little bit.”

It comes just a day after Fury teamed up with poet Hussain Manawer on the poem about addiction read aloud in a powerful film montage.
The poem included the lines: “You are not my best friend. Stop trying to tell me you are.
“It’s because of you I started lying. It’s because of you my habits started changing. And because of you, more of you, I was buying.”
“But I agree, you are there for me when nobody else is, when I’m really feeling helpless.

“But because of you, some of my closest friends are starting to call me selfish.”

Tyson Fury starred in a short film to mark World Mental Health day
Speaking about the motivation behind the film, via Boxing News 24/7, Fury said: “It’s incredibly important to speak up and fight the stigma of mental health.
“Boxers are the toughest of the tough but mental health affects each and every one of us differently.
“Working with Hussain and creating the short film reminds people that they are not alone – help is always there and it’s important we keep talking about it.

“This World Mental Health Day we need to redefine what it means to be a ‘strong man’.”
After snatching Wladimir Klitschko’s heavyweight crown in 2015, the 6ft 9in Brit ballooned in weight to 28st after boozing and bingeing on cocaine – leaving him feeling low and empty.
Tragically, Fury revealed he even attempted to take his own life in 2016 by driving his Ferrari towards a bridge at 190mph.
And the 32-year-old admitted to suffering with his mental health during lockdown – relying on his daily workouts to stop him ‘going round the bend’.
