How will Brexit change transfers into Premier League? Britain’s departure from EU’s impact on football explained

BREXIT has finally happened after nearly four years of negotiations between Brussels and Westminster.
And that means transfers are going to be affected, with the number of lower-quality EU players likely to be restricted as the transfer window opens on January 1 and shuts on February 1 at 11pm.

Would Bruno Fernandes’ transfer to Manchester United have been scuppered by Brexit?Credit: Getty Images – Getty

Virgil van Dijk’s career in Scottish and then English football could have been very different with BrexitCredit: Reuters

Here, SunSport’s CHARLIE WYETT explains what happens next…
WILL BREXIT AFFECT PREMIER LEAGUE TRANSFERS?
Yes, it will have a massive impact on English football.
There is now a strict points system to bring in players from the EU, like the rest of the world, meaning only experienced stars are likely to be allowed.
Because of restricted movement, teams will no longer be able to sign 16-year-olds from the EU — and must wait until they are 18.

    ANY POSITIVES FROM BREXIT?
    Potentially for home-grown players.
Academies become even more important as clubs are forced to focus on kids from this country.
Brexit could also see prices for younger British players increase, while the overall standard of academy graduates looks certain to worsen with top EU talent missing.
WILL IT BE A BUSY WINDOW?
No chance. It will be the quietest month ever.

Clubs have been increasingly keen to avoid doing much business in January and the Covid crisis will ensure there is even less activity.
Income has reduced massively so clubs are not interested in adding to their wage bills.
So big-money swoops for stars such as Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski will be off the table.
SO WILL THERE BE ANY DEALS?
Loan deals for experienced players are the most likely to happen.
If a Premier League club loans a player on £40,000 a week and brings in another one on the same wages, they can freshen up the side without it costing anything.
WHICH CLUBS ARE THE MOST LIKELY TO DO BUSINESS?
Liverpool are in the market for a central defender — because Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk have long-term injuries and Joel Matip is incapable of staying fit.
However, boss Jurgen Klopp is not certain he will get the player he wants.
At Spurs, midfielder Dele Alli could be leaving on loan — while rivals Arsenal want to offload some high-earners but have not had many takers.
Manchester United are chasing defenders, yet they are more likely to do their business in the summer.
Players in the last year of their contracts are now free to talk to overseas clubs, such as Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum.

WILL WE SEE YOUNG PLAYERS LOANED OUT BY PREM CLUBS?
January usually sees youngsters who are nowhere near the first team given the second half of the season at an EFL side.
However, the increase to nine subs is meaning that some Prem clubs intend to keep hold of them.

Top 10 biggest transfer value rises of 2020 including Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes and Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka More

You can also download NOW TV onto a Smart TV.

James Forrest is still out of action for the visitors.

Who is Karen Carney, who did she play for, when did she retire and how long has she been a football pundit?

KAREN CARNEY’S career in football has spanned over two decades, with her work seen both on AND off the pitch.
But it’s her work as a pundit which football fans know her best for these days.

Find out everything you need to know about Carney and her career below…
    Who is Karen Carney?
Carney was born in Solihull, England on August 1, 1987 to parents Michael and Marie.
She attended St Peter’s RC Secondary school before graduating from Loughborough University with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science in 2009.
In 2013, Carney completed her Masters degree in Sports Psychology at University of Gloucestershire.

Carney is also currently studying toward a Master of Business Administration degree.

    Who did she play for?
Her career as a footballer began in 1998 where she played for Birmingham’s youth team, before making it into their first team in 2001.
She left her home city club for Arsenal in 2006, where she scored 28 times in 54 league appearances across three years.
Carney had another spell back at Birmingham, and she also spent seasons with the Chicago Red Stars and later Chelsea toward the end of her career.

She notched 10 times in 36 games for the Blues.
Across 14 years, Carney earned herself 144 caps for England, scoring 32 times in the process and becoming a Lioness legend.

When did she retire and how long has she worked in punditry?
Carney retired in 2019 after the Women’s World Cup campaign with England.
The Lionesses finished fourth in the tournament after losing 2-1 in the third-place play-off to Sweden.
Carney has been working for various broadcasters as a football pundit since the beginning of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Carney has provided analysis for all the major sport broadcasters in the UK, including Sky Sports and BT Sport.
She’s also undertaken punditry work for the BBC and Amazon Prime Video.
What were her comments on Leeds?
It was during Amazon’s broadcast of Leeds’ recent Premier League win over West Brom where Carney made comments about Leeds’ promotion last season.
Carney suggested that Leeds may not have won promotion to the Premier League had Marcelo Bielsa’s side not benefitted from the break because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Leeds controversially tweeted about Carney’s opinion and the former England player has since suffered online abuse as a result.

Former Leeds defender Ben White and current player Mateusz Klich also chimed in with their own thoughts on Carney’s comments.
Leeds have since condemned the abuse Carney received, with chairman Andrea Radrizzani apologising for it.
“I’m very sorry Karen was abused on social media. I wanted to defend my club and our players from a comment, which I felt was harsh from Karen on air,” he said.
“Our tweet wasn’t offensive — simply stating that we won the league by 10 points.”
According to The Times, Carney has been invited to Leeds’ training ground to do TV work for their upcoming FA Cup clash with Crawley. More
