Why is James Rodriguez not playing for Colombia at 2021 Copa America?

JAMES RODRIGUEZ has long been regarded as Colombia’s most valuable player, but this summer, the Everton midfielder has been deemed surplus to requirements. Colombia are taking part in this summer’s Copa America tournament, but will be without star player Rodriguez, who has had injury problems with loan club Everton throughout the course of the season.

Copa America starts on June 13 and will be hosted by Brazil after Covid-hit Colombia and Argentina pulled out as hosts.
Why is James Rodriguez not playing for Colombia at Copa America?
Unfortunately and unexpectedly for Rodriguez, he simply wasn’t chosen by manager Reinaldo Rueda because they deemed him not to be at the ‘optimal level’.
Rodriguez had been hit with injuries throughout the 2020/21 season with Everton but performed well when he played for the Toffees.

The former Real Madrid star, however, worked his way into a position to be fit for this summer’s tournament, but boss Rueda still didn’t fancy taking Rodriguez.
A statement read: “The coaching staff of the Colombia Men’s Senior Team reports that the player James Rodríguez has been called off for the games against Peru and Argentina for the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and the CONMEBOL Copa América 2021.
“In recent days, the midfielder was subjected to medical examinations, which determined that he is not at the optimal level of competition, therefore, he will not be able to join the group called by Reinaldo Rueda for the aforementioned commitments and the South American championship.
“The coach and his team of collaborators regret not being able to count on James Rodríguez this time and hope that soon the midfielder will be able to be part of a call, representing our country with the height and professionalism as he has always done.”

Rodriguez came back with a statement of his own, noting that he was disappointed with the decision.
“I want to express my thoughts and feelings regarding the decision made by the coaching staff of the Colombian team for the upcoming knockout dates and Copa America,” he explained.
“I come from a recovery that is in its final part. In which I took enough time to fully integrate myself to the practice of soccer and in this way not affect my participation in the next commitments of our Selection.
“The pertinent times of this process suggest that I be careful to participate on date 7 of the tie, but they would allow me to fully integrate on date 8 and of course be for the Copa America 2021.
“With surprise I receive the statement from the main technical body stating that they do not count on me and wishing me a full recovery.
James Rodriguez spent periods of the 2020/21 season on the injury tableCredit: Reuters
“Recovery that I already made and in which I have sacrificed a lot.
“The above filled me with deep disappointment because for me it means playing for my country.
“Not receiving the trust from the technical body breaks with everything and causes me enormous pain, since for the shirt of the Colombia team I have always left even my life.
“For my colleagues the best energy and best wishes. From a distance I will support with the passion of always.”
Colombia’s Copa American campaign will begin on June 15 against Ecuador. More

Why isn’t Ryan Giggs managing Wales at Euro 2020 this summer?

WALES will be looking to go on another brilliant run at the Euros this summer but will be doing so WITHOUT Ryan Giggs in the dugout. Giggs has been Wales boss since 2018 and managed to steer them through the Euro qualifiers and into this summer’s tournament.

But the Man Utd icon won’t be there to manage his players to glory.
Why isn’t Ryan Giggs managing Wales at Euro 2020?
Giggs was readying his squad for their long-awaited Euros campaign this summer before being arrested in April.
Giggs, 47, was charged with coercive control and actual bodily harm in relation to his ex-girlfriend, while he was also charged with assault by beating relating to a second woman.
“We have authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Ryan Giggs with engaging in behaviour which was controlling or coercive and assault occasioning actual bodily harm,” the Crown Prosecution Service announced.

As a result, the Welsh FA announced Robert Page would be taking Giggs place as manager for the Euros.
Giggs will go on trial for his alleged crimes on January 24, 2021.
The former United winger didn’t enter a formal plea but says he “looks forward to clearing my name”.
Who are Wales playing at Euro 2020?
Wales are in Group A for this summer’s European Championships, meaning they will play Switzerland, Turkey and Italy in the group stages.
Ahead of their first game against Switzerland, Wales will play two friendlies against France and Albania.

Why is Karim Benzema playing for France in Euro 2020 and why was he dropped for the World Cup?

KARIM BENZEMA missed France’s World Cup triumph, but he’s back for Les Bleus after a surprise recall from boss Didier Deschamps. So why has he been brought back into the fold, and why was he frozen out in the first place?
Benzema is back for FranceCredit: AFP OR LICENSORS
Why wasn’t Karim Benzema playing for France in the World Cup?
Didier Deschamps made Benzema ineligible for selection over a blackmail case involving former teammate Mathieu Valbuena and a sex tape.
And the former French skipper had overlooked the striker ever since.
Benzema said of his omission: “It’s a vague story. There was that sex tape affair, it was also because of that. Personally, what goes beyond sport you have to put to one side, you need the best to win trophies.”
The Real Madrid star also said Deschamps had “bowed to a racist part of France” by refusing to pick him.

Why is Karim Benzema playing for France in Euro 2020?
The blackmail scandal has not yet been resolved, with a court hearing to take place later this year. Yet Didier Deschamps has decided he needs Benzema for the Euros.
Deschamps said of his decision: “I’m not going to give you or anyone else any more details about that.
“You know the story of our meeting, the most important step: we met and talked. Without that, it would have been impossible.
“To talk about forgiveness is a big word. We are not talking about Didier Deschamps as a man, but Didier Deschamps as a coach.
“And I am in a position [as coach]. As I said before, I’ll say it again, even if it’s hard for some people to understand: I’m not interested in my personal situation.” More

Why is Jesse Lingard starting for England vs Austria when he isn’t in the Euro 2020 squad?

GARETH SOUTHGATE has named his England Euro 2020 squad and there isn’t any room for Jesse Lingard. But that does not mean this is the end for the West Ham loanee as far as international football this summer is concerned.
Jesse Lingard is not in the England Euro 2020 squad, but Gareth Southgate has said he will start against AustriaCredit: Getty
For a start, Gareth Southgate has stated that Lingard will START in the pre-tournament friendly against Austria at the Riverside.
Why is Jesse Lingard set to start for England against Austria?
While Jesse Lingard is not in the England Euro 2020 squad, the Three Lions have a number of players out for the game against Austria.
Additionally, new Covid rules mean he is not ruled out of the Euros entirely.
Uefa regulations state that while the 26-man squads had to be announced by June 21, changes can be made right up to the opening game of Euro 2020.
And that means there could yet be a logic in giving Lingard another chance to show what he can do.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate said: “Jesse’s done incredibly well to get back in the race really.
“Going back to January, he was a million miles from being selected for an England squad.
“I said in March he’d had a fabulous few weeks but you’d have to say he was a little fortunate [to be named in the squad for World Cup qualifying], because we were without about four wide players at the time.
“He’s had a good spell for West Ham and he’s played so well for us with England.
“We have total trust in the way he plays. He’s reliable, he’s a great member of the group.
“He will play tomorrow because we’ve got Sancho ill and we’ve obviously got a lot of players not available, and for the balance of the team he’ll start.
“He deserves that opportunity to go and show me that I’m wrong.
“But also, the lads that are with us. They’re the standby players and we’ve got to keep them ready in case they come into that squad.”
