Rangers legend Jimmy Millar dies aged 87 as tributes pour in for Ibrox goal machine


RANGERS have announced the passing of club legend Jimmy Millar at the age of 87.

A former centre-forward, Millar was a prolific goalscorer for the Ibrox club.

It was revealed five years ago that Millar had been battling dementia for the previous decade.

Finding the net 162 times in 317 appearances, he spent 12 years at Ibrox between 1955 and 1967.

Millar won the league title three times, as well as five Scottish Cups and three League Cups with the Light Blues.

He was also inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame.

Announcing the passing of one of the club’s greatest-ever strikers, the Gers described him as “a tough, brave and quick centre-forward.”

Millar began his senior career with Dunfermline Athletic, with his form in Fife catching the attention of Rangers.

Scot Symon signed him up for £5,000 in January 1955.

It would prove an inspired signing as Millar went on to become an integral part of the Rangers side of the 1960s.

Playing alongside the likes of John Greig, Jim Baxter and Eric Caldow, Millar helped the Light Blues to the Scottish League championship in 1961, 1963 and 1964.

He was also well known for his clinical strike partnership with Ralph Brand.

He was also part of the team that reached the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1961. playing in the second leg in Italy when Rangers took on Fiorentina.

Tributes have been paid to the Ibrox icon, with several fans leaving their messages of condolence.

Comedian and Gers supporter Andy Cameron remembered him with a poignant social media post.

He said: “Jimmy Millar, who epitomised what being a Ranger meant, has passed away.

“Lions in Africa used to tell their young that they had the heart of Jimmy Millar

“My daughter Ellen told him ‘Mr Millar, see when I was six, I wanted to be you.’

“Old Warhorse rest easy.”

One fan said: “One of my teenage years heroes. Him and Ralph Brand were dynamite. RIP Legend.”

Another Gers fan said: “Sad news. Rest easy Jimmy, a real true blue.”

While a third posted: “I wasn’t fortunate enough to see Jimmy play but my dad did and said that he was a gem. My condolences to his family and friends.”

A fourth supporter said: “Probably the favourite player of the majority of supporters who saw that team.”

The club also passed on its condolences, saying: “Our thoughts a re with Jimmy’s family at this sad time.”
