Steve Bruce backs himself to come through £300m Saudi takeover and keep Newcastle job despite Mauricio Pochettino links

STEVE BRUCE still hopes to come through the other side of a Gulf storm as Newcastle manager.

The Premier League has not yet agreed the £300million Saudi-led takeover of the club.

But if given the nod, Bruce backs himself to stay in charge — despite big name managers, including Mauricio Pochettino, being linked.

He said: “It could only happen to Newcastle! I’ve only been here for nearly a year but are we surprised?

“I’ve just let it go over my head because there is nothing I can do.

“If I can help them I would love to stay in charge. I hope I get the chance.”

Bruce is still working on his transfer targets, such as Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser.

He added: “We have one or two things up our sleeve but like all clubs we will have to see where the shortfalls are in terms of budget.”

Newcastle host Sheffield United today and Bruce holds dearly the reception fans gave him at the return game in December.

He added: “The supporters enjoyed seeing the resilience of the team.

“The vast amount of people I bump into on the street have been hugely respectful and wish me the best of luck.

“Whoever replaced Rafa Benitez was going to have a difficult time — I was under no illusions.”
