Relegated Charlton ‘considering a legal challenge’ after Sheffield Wednesday’s 12-point rap is set for next season

CHARLTON are considering legal action after the EFL chose to deduct Sheffield Wednesday 12 points for NEXT season.

Had the Owls been penalised for the 2019-20 Championship campaign, they would have had 44 points and been relegated in place of Charlton who went down on 48 points.

Instead, boss Garry Monk’s Wednesday finished 16th in the league.

The Sheffield club were deducted points for breaking Financial Fair Play rules.

A tweet posted from Charlton’s official account on Friday night confirmed they are considering the legal route.

An Addicks statement read: “We fail to understand why the deduction will take place next season rather than the current season, which seems irrational. And we are writing to the EFL to get an explanation of the justification.”

The EFL statement suggested the penalty has been delayed until the 2020-21 season because Wednesday were found NOT guilty of “breaching its duty of utmost good faith”.

But the decision will also frustrate Wigan whose own 12-point penalty for going into administration saw them go down, although they await an appeal.

An independent commission, appointed under EFL rules, said Wednesday should NOT have included profits from the sale of Hillsborough in statements ending July 2018.

An EFL statement read: “Sheffield Wednesday will receive a 12-point deduction for breaching the League’s profitability and sustainability rules. It will take effect in 2020-21.

“The club was found not guilty of a further charge of breaching its duty of utmost good faith to the EFL by deliberately concealing information.”

Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri intends to await written reasons for the sanction and “consider the details with legal advisers”.
