Reports from Nice in southern France suggest the incident occurred at the La Turbie training ground which is cut into the mountains just off the coast.

Players were said to be arriving when a “piece of the cliff” collapsed on a piece of machinery the worker was operating, according to Nice-Matin.

Geologists are expected to attend to secure the area.

The stunning setting for the complex is similar to Monaco’s stadium which is just yards from the sea and set among apartment blocks and marinas.

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas currently plays for the French club who finished ninth in Ligue 1 this season after coronavirus put a stop to French football.

Manchester United and Arsenal target Wissam Ben Yedder also plays for the Ligue 1 outfit.

Fabregas recently expressed disappointment at French authorities’ decision to scrap the season “too soon” and crown Paris Saint-Germain champions.

Other leagues in Europe have now restarted and the Spanish star thinks France could have followed suit.

He said: “It was a big decision that was made and I can understand why they took it

“But maybe it was taken a little too soon, considering a lot of the big leagues are still all trying to resume.

“Although I completely understand the meaning behind it and it’s better to be safe in all accounts, because the most important is the families and the health security of everyone and support this 100 per cent.

“But maybe we could’ve considered individual training, where you have basically no risk. You’re not touching anyone, you’re not close to anyone.

“See if everyone was getting closer to football behind played all over the world.

“Obviously, it’s very difficult and I understand someone needs to make decisions. We just have to do what they’re telling us.

“Difficult moment in our professional lives and personal lives, but we just have to hold on and everything will be fine in the future for sure.”
