However, after just just seven months and as many games played Mandzukic announced his stint in the Middle East is over.

He tweeted: “I reached an agreement with Al-Duhail management to terminate my contract by mutual consent.

“I appreciate the trust and hospitality that I have received in Qatar and I wish the best to the club and the team in future.”

Mandzukic was frozen out of the Juve picture earlier in the season with manager Maurizio Sarri refusing to play him.

United were close to snapping up the experienced Croatian as they looked to bolster their attack and provide back up to Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

But the 34-year-old chose a mega-money move to Qatar so the Red Devils turned to Odion Ighalo who joined on loan from Shanghai Shenhua.

Ighalo hit the ground running and extended his loan until next January, at which point he will return back to China.

That could leave the door open for United to make a move for freebie Mandzukic.

But the veteran striker has also been linked with a move back to Italy, with AC Milan reportedly interested.

It is understood San Siro bosses see Mandzukic as a direct replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
