With just two games played in the top flight before the season was KO’d indefinitely by coronavirus, Cincinnati had suffered two losses on the bounce in the Eastern Conference, putting them third from bottom on the table.

The American outfit have been on the hunt for a new manager after former boss Ron Jans, resigned midway through February after allegedly using a racial slur in the dressing room.

According to The Athletic, Cincinnati have identified former Red Devils and Holland centre-back Staam, and LA Galaxy assistant Dominic Kinnear as potential candidates.

The club’s general manager Gerard Nijkamp, told reporters that he hoped they would find a new boss by the time the MLS resumes – and that he had already interviewed three candidates.
In June last year, Staam succeeded  Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Feyenoord boss but the 47-year-old failed to get his new side going – only winning three of his 11 Eredivisie games in charge.

The final straw was a shocking 4-0 defeat to Ajax in Amsterdam in October before the Dutchman stepped down.

Stam’s first managerial post was at Reading – where he came within a playoff final penalty shootout of promotion to the Premier League.

The Royals were pipped by Huddersfield in the Wembley showpiece back in 2017.

Stam eventually left the Madejski the season following a run of just one win in 18 leaving them 20th in the table.

He then had a short spell at PEC Zwolle, before taking the Feyenoord job.

The Red Devils legend was revered at Old Trafford in his heyday for his tough tackling in matches.

The Dutch defender won the Champions League, three Premier League titles and the FA Cup with United before leaving for Lazio in 2001.

He also won silverware with PSV Eindhoven, Lazio, AC Milan and Ajax, as well as a string of individual awards.
