The ex-Liverpool full-back, 27, is keen to return to the North West after two years in Scotland.

However, it’s unclear whether he would be prepared to drop down the divisions to play League One football.

Barton – who flopped at the Light Blues in 2016 – may have a better chance if the Cod Army are promoted to the Championship.

Versatile Flanagan made 39 appearances for Rangers but mostly played back-up to James Tavernier and Borna Barisic.

Flanagan was among six players who were released after the SPFL season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Wes Foderingham, Andy Halliday, Jason Holt, Jordan Rossiter and Jak Alnwick also left the club.

Meanwhile Steven Gerrard is eyeing up a loan move for Liverpool kid Rhian Brewster.

The 20-year-old striker joined Championship side Swansea on loan in January and scored four goals in 11 games.

Brewster, who played three times for the Anfield side in the cups, is expected to be farmed out for a full campaign next season.

Swans manager Steve Cooper wants him back for a second stint but fears the prospect of playing European football at Ibrox could swing it.

Along with Gers boss Gerrard’s obvious links to Liverpool, there is an attractive personal element to the move.

Brewster played under Gerrard during his time in charge of the Anfield Under-18 side and has previously spoken of his admiration for the former England midfielder.

He also worked with Ibrox coach Michael Beale at Chelsea and followed him from London to Merseyside six years ago.

Gers hope rekindling those partnerships will appeal to Brewster.

Gerrard has already secured the services of Leicester youngster Calvin Bassey on a pre-contract, while Ianis Hagi has joined on a £3million deal.
