Vasily Lomachenko begins training camp for Teofimo Lopez with October 3 date pencilled in for unification fight

VSAILY LOMACHENKO has kicked off his training camp for his fight with Teofimo Lopez – with October 3 pencilled in for the unification fight.

The pair were due to fight in April before the coronavirus pandemic wiped out boxing across the globe.

Lopez and Lomachenko were due to fight in April before the coronavirus pandemic wiped out boxing across the globe

But after promoter Bob Arum started staging events behind closed doors at the end of June, Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas told ESPN the Ukrainian has officially began preparing for his ring return.

And the unified champion will have three months to prepare for Lopez.

Arum told BoxingScene: “Loma-Lopez, we had scheduled it for September 19 as the working date but now it will probably go on pay-per-view and that means the working date now is October 3.”

Arum hopes crowds can return at a reduced capacity towards the end of the year and believes Lomachenko could fight with fans in attendance

He said: “Right now, with the spike going on Nevada we couldn’t schedule it even with limited spectators.

“Hopefully, and we have some time, we’re looking to do that fight for 2,000 or maybe 2,500 people.”

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, who are set to fight in December, are already being lined up to headline at the Raiders Allegiant Stadium in Vegas.

And despite Arum’s plan to have Lomachenko too fight with supports in attendance, his Top Rank colleague Todd DuBoef  admitted behind closed doors is more likely.

DuBoef told ESPN: “It’s still too early to determine everything.

“I’m not sure that fight happens with fans.”
