Why are Championship matches being played on Sunday?

YOU may have noticed that there is a bumper eleven-game fixture list on Sunday, December 29.

Both West Brom and Leeds face tough matches as they look to continue their automatic promotion push, whilst the battle for the playoffs and relegation spots continue.

Every side in action today played on Boxing Day, which this year fell on a Thursday.

As such, all of the Football League fixtures for the weekend were scheduled for the Sunday to give teams at least two full days to prepare.

If matches were played on Saturday, it would mean just a 48-hour turnover – which even during this hectic schedule, is too quick.

Derby will host Charlton on Monday, December 30 and will as a result have a day more to prepare for their midweek fixtures next week.

The majority of the Championship will play on New Year’s Day, whilst both those side will play on Thursday, January 2.
