The attacking midfielder had to have his head bandaged up as a result.

But it didn’t stop Roma storming to a 3-0 victory and keeping their hopes alive for a knockout spot in the competition.

They currently sit behind leaders Borussia Moenchengladbach, who beat Austrians Wolfsberg 1-0 on goal difference.

The Serie A team had been leading the hosts by three goals at the point of Pellegrini being struck.

A sign of angry frustration from their opponents no doubt.

First-half goals from Jordan Veretout, Justin Kluivert and Edin Dzeko had given the visitors the edge towards a sport in the last 32, before the mood changed for a short while.

The 23-year-old was later substituted, but Roma remained in control for the rest of the game, regardless of the fan drama.

Pellegrini joined Roma’s youth team at just nine years old.

He went on to make his senior debut in 2015 in a Serie A clash against Cesena.

The Italian has had an impressive run this campaign, including getting two assists in the clash in Turkey despite efforts to sour the occassion.

A security message was read out over the tannoy after the incident and the game was paused.
