First, ref Anthony Taylor’s decision not to award a spot-kick for Bernardo Silva’s foul on Marcus Rashford was overturned.

Then, a handball by Fred, which stopped Kyle Walker’s cross getting into the box, was looked at but no penalty was given.

Boss Pep Guardiola had a long exchange with fourth official Mike Dean at half-time.

Midfielder Rodri said: “Decisions can change matches. This time it didn’t help us.

“We are p***ed off but we have to keep fighting. Some decisions can change matches and VAR is there for getting decisions right.

“They gave United the penalty, and for us, no penalty.”

Yet Rodri admits City’s title defence could be over before the Christmas decorations have even gone up, with them 14 points adrift of Liverpool.

He said: “It’s too much.

“I tell supporters to stay behind us because we have other things this year, other cups.”
