Napoli fans ‘chased Genk supporters with axes and hammers’ before must-win Champions League clash

NAPOLI hooligans chased travelling Genk fans with “hammers and axes” before their Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Around 1,200 supporters from the Belgium side made the trip to Naples but their experience was marred with violence and a lack of organised transport.

Genk headed to the fixture with nothing to play for having already finished bottom while Napoli knew a win would secure their qualification into the next round.

But tensions ran high outside the stadium and in the city in the build-up to kick-off.

Genk fans had arranged to take designated buses from the hotels to the stadium but there was a shortage meaning some fans missed the entire first half.

One bus even had the window smashed through while others were attacked with scooter helmets.

When they arrived back to their hotel after the game, locals then attempted to attack them with glass bottles.

A fan told HLN: “A window was smashed in front of me and behind me in our bus.

“Axes, knives, stones … They all used it. When a window broke, everyone wanted to go outside, luckily we didn’t do that. We were also treated like animals at the stadium.”

Another supporter added: “We were chased by scooters several times on Monday evening when we returned to the hotel.

“They threatened to throw their helmets and glass bottles.”

Napoli have a history of causing trouble on European nights and only last month they clashed with police before their game with Liverpool.

In September two Reds supporters were rushed to hospital with head injuries after Napoli hooligans pelted crowds with glass bottles.
